I'm driving from MCO to TV in 6 days. Last time I drove this route in June, I missed the manned toll booth on SR-528 leading to the Florida Turnpike and went through a Sunpass lane by accident.

Thrifty Car Rental told me in June that the "manned" toll booths on SR-528 and the Turnpike would be going away by the end of the year and replaced with Sunpass lanes. For those of you who have recently driven between MCO and TV using SR-528 and the Florida Turnpike can tolls still be paid with a person, or do I have to pony up $6 a day to the car rental company for a temporary Sunpass for the rental car? Thanks in advance.

Here's an idea:
Why not pick up a free Sunpass sticker and register it online to your personal vehicle. Establish an account with the minimum $10 replenishment amount. Then, rather than affixing the sticker to a rental car, attach it with a strip of tape. As you go through the toll booth, your account will be billed, but you can remove the sticker easily and later put it your own vehicle. I know the intentions are for the sticker to be used only in one car, but that I think is because once you fasten the sticker in the intended fashion, it is virtually impossible to remove and reuse. I believe there is no regulation prohibiting this, as the Sunpass transponders can be moved from vehicle to vehicle. But they also come with a $25 fee.

There is still manned booths enroute on FL turnpike and 528 headed out to the airport. Just went that way and came back on Thursday 27th of Sept. Just to let you know...from the wildwood exit to the airport (roundtrip) with sunpass is a total of 10.83. You can shave 1.50 off each way if you get on and off at Leesburg using sunpass. As many trips as we've had to make down there over the last few months sunpass has come in handy.

goodgrief, Thank you for the info. This is why TOTV is so useful to this wannabee who can only visit TV a couple of times a year. You folks rock.

If you rent from Enterprise, they simply hit your credit card [after the fact] for the tolls. The toll booth takes a photo of the license plate and Enterprise gets the toll. FOr that service, they charge $2.50 service fee.

This way, you can drive right thru the Sunpass lanes with no worries.

We've had a SunPass for the past few years, and used it whenever we came to Florida (3-4 times a year) since it's the kind that has suction cups, we've registered it to the rental car that we use while here (there's a section on the website to do it for rental cars, even after you go through a toll). It also allows us to use it in either of our cars. My son even borrowed it when he came down here on vacation - I just went to the website and registered him as a user. Now that we live here at TV, it just stays in the car all the time !! Hope this helps...

Unless things have changed in the past 2 years, there are no free Sunpass stickers. The single car type costs $5, or at least it did 2 years ago. When you register the sticker, you have to enter your tag number, so I don't know if you would be able to use it on different cars like you are suggesting.

Let me clarify. Yes you pay $5 for the Sunpass sticker, but unlike the $25 transponder, you are credited the full $5 back in toll charges.

Yes, you have to enter your tag number, but if you do not attach the sticker with the permanent adhesive, you can physically move it to another car. The important thing is that you are paying for all usage through a legitimate account attached to the vehicle you own.

Don't know exactly how it worked, but my daughter and son-in-law were here in early September, rented a car from Enterprise. They were assured that the car was equipped with SunPass, and that they would be billed after they were home.

So far, I haven't heard any complaints that they were over-charged, or charged when they didn't travel a certain route or anything else.

For a rental, that sounds very convenient.

Where do you get a Sunpass sticker? I have to take some friends back and forth to MCO so I'll actually be making 2 round trips. It sounds like it could cost me over $40; so is it cheaper with Sunpass and worth it. If I don't get a pass, do I need exact change?

Go on line to Fl. sunpass.com---I did it last Jan. & it took 5 days to get it via us mail. I think?????? Publix also sells them; give them a call.

When I went through the manned toll booths, I did not need exact change.

CVS also sells them. I don't know if it's cheaper than paying as you go, but it's a heck of a lot more convenient.
