Default ebooks/readers and library question

Black Friday sales are nearly here and there are some good specials on ereaders. I have looked at various readers and have pretty much decided on what I am going to get if any are still available by the time I get to the store. I have a couple of questions that I hope the good folks here can answer.

I know that you can purchase the novels from the various sites depending the reader for around $10, (amazon, Barnes and Noble etc). If you have wifi or an internet connection I assume you can download the books to the reader or the computer. (in about 60 seconds in some cases. I am mainly interested in using the library (both local and in TV) if possible.

Questions:
1. Does the library in TV on 466 have ebooks that you can download?

2. When I find a library that has ebooks and I have that library card is this the following the process if I have "epub" capability on my reader. The reader I am thinking of does not have wifi but my computer and house has wifi.

-I log in...usually to overdrive in most libraries.
-I find the book I want
-I download it..
Does it download to my ereader or to my computer(and then I would drag and drop to my reader)? Then I would have a specific time to read the novel before it disappears.

Anything special I should know?

The public library near the Villages High School (Sumter County) is a Member of the Tampa Bay Library Consortium which MAY give you access to the various ebooks that the Pinellas Public Library Cooperative library members have. http://www.tblc.org/reciprocal/patron_libraries.php

I did note the Pinellas Public Library Cooperative has a lot of ebooks in their catalog. http://www.pplc.us/libraries.shtml

http://www.pplc.us/downloadable.shtml

There may be some restrictions though on out of county reciprocal borrowers and e-books.

As a Sumter County Library card holder, I have checked out DVDs, books, and other materials from various libraries in the Tarpon Springs-Palm Harbor-Clearwater area of FL, but I had to, of course, physically be in the library and had to return the materials at a library which had a means of getting the borrowed materials back to the proper library.

I did not see any indication that any Lake, Marion, or Sumter County Public Library had ebooks available. Orange County does but a non-Resident would have to buy a library card. http://www.ocls.info/Downloadables/default.asp

You may be able to get an Orange County Library Card if you live in Lake County. http://www.ocls.info/Card/Default.asp

This web-site gives some information about what public libraries in FL have ebooks and the various technical aspects. http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/EBoo...raries#Florida

The Villages Library does not have ebooks YET. They say they will be getting them. I use the Free Library of Philadelphia. If you don't live in PA the fee is $15. They have a nice selection. You may need to put a book on hold and then they email when it is available. I've borrowed many books from them. Takes a while to get your library card. After a week I called and they gave me my number over the phone. Before you use a library you must download Adobe Digital Editions. The book downloads to ADE and then you drag the book to the word (in my case Nook). You can keep it 21 days.

Yes, you must be capable to use E-Pub with your reader.

Correct me Kindle owners if I'm wrong, but I don't THINK the Kindle can use libraries. I know the Nook does, and the Sony e-reader and I think the KoBo e-reader do.

Any other questions?

Douga,

I have a Nook that my kids bought for me last year and I love it...use it every single day. Initially I thought I would miss holding a book and turning the pages, now I can't even stand the thought of having to hold a book and manually turn those pages!

I initially began purchasing books from Barnes and Noble. It is easy to just download with wifi. It was great not having to pay full price for a newly released hard-cover book, then I got tired of paying even the $9.99 to download a book. Thanks to someone on these boards, I signed up for the Philadelphia Free Library ($15 per year). They have a very large selection of ebooks in .pub format. The sight allows you to put your books into in a wish list and then request them as you want...some you need to be put on the list, others are available immediately. Even if you have to wait it is not very long...just a few days. You then just download it to your computer and open it with Adobe Digital Reader. Plug the nook into your computer, drag the book over and the book is yours to read for 21 days. I figure by the time the year is up, my $15 will have provided me with over 100 books or more. That's a bargain in my book (pun intended!!)

If you're going to use the nook for just reading, don't pay more for the color one...just buy the original one. Best of luck in your quest.

pklein9747 gave you good advice regarding the nook -- buy the original one, not the color. The original has the e-ink which is easier to read because it is not backlit like a computer screen. The color one has a backlit screen.

If you want a color nook to browse the internet, you may as well get an ipad instead.

I LOVE MY NOOK!

I agree. The only reason to get a color Nook is if you plan to read a lot of magazines on it or you plan to read childrens books to little ones.

Default E-Books coming to Sumter Libraries soon

The contract referred to below was unanimously approved by the County Commissioners at their meeting on January 10th. If all goes well some e-books may begin to become available through Sumter County Library in March of this year.

SUMTER COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
SUBJECT: Agreement with OverDrive, Digital Library Reserve Content Service Plan
Application Services for e-Books for Sumter County Library System.
REQUESTED ACTION: Approval of contract by BOCC
Work Session (Report Only) DATE OF MEETING: 1/10/2012
Regular Meeting Special Meeting
CONTRACT: N/A Vendor/Entity: OverDrive, Inc.
Effective Date: 1/10/2012 Termination Date: 1/10/2015
Managing Division / Dept: Community Services Division/Library Services
BUDGET IMPACT: 13,000.00
Annual FUNDING SOURCE: General Fund/State Aid
Capital EXPENDITURE ACCOUNT: 001-469-571-5400
N/A
HISTORY/FACTS/ISSUES:
Staff recommends OverDrive as our digital distributor of e-Books. OverDrive has the widest catalog of
the best copyrighted premium materials. The vendor 3M offers similar content at a higher initial
e-Book commitment price and higher average subscription price. The vendor Library Ideas only
provides materials from small publishers and are not compatible with the Amazon Kindle e-Reader.
The OverDrive contract is a 4-year commitment to purchase e-Books for $13,000 per year. It has a
non-appropriation clause (section 11.2) which allows the BOCC to terminate the contract in the event
that funding is not available. This web-based service will enable the Sumter County Library System to
loan e-Books to library patrons via the Library website.
The OverDrive database will utilize a SIP2 connection (Standard Interchange Protocol version 2) as a
means of authenticating patrons by way of their library cards and is available through SirsiDynix, our
Intergrated Library System vendor. The connection will be established once the agreement with
OverDrive is approved.
Approval of the agreement will allow library staff to provide the service of e-Books to Sumter County
Library System patrons. Estimated availability of the service to patrons is March 2012 following
thorough training of library staff.
