Default Newbie asking about Garage Sales

Hi! We are new here and so far we are Loving it! Thank you for this website! :-) My Question: Garage Sales in The Villages- What are the rules/regulations? Does each neighborhood have their own? Who is a contact person if you need permission or want to organize a possible "street or neighborhood" garage sale!?? Thanks so much and have a great day! Eliz

We consult the Villages Daily Sun for garage sales and we would recommend that you advertise your sale with them. We've seen single and multi-family sales so it appears to be pretty much open. Not sure if there are rules and regulations....but I wouldn't want to put a car on my lawn with a For Sale sign on it. As you can see, The Villages is about 'pride of home ownership. Just thinking, check with VCDD to see if there are any regulation or rules.

From the District Gov, Community Standards tab
[http://www.districtgov.org/departmen...ge%20Sales.pdf

CONDITIONS FOR GARAGE SALES
1. No signs; balloons on lamp posts are allowed.
2. All items must be wholly contained within the garage or carport, not on the lawn or
driveway.
3. Homeowner having sale is responsible for any damage caused by increased traffic
including, but not limited to, damage to irrigation heads, plants, shrubbery or curbing.
4. Sale is to be for a single household unless a fundraiser for a not-for-profit group in which case everything must be in one garage only.
5. No more than one sale in a 12-month period.
6. Homeowner is asked to advise Community Watch in advance of the sale so that they can staff for any additional neighborhood traffic (753-0550).

There are often neighborhood garage sales. There is no person to contact for permission. Talk with your neighbors to see if neighborhood sale is something they would want to participate in. You can also have just your own sale.
Pick a date, place an add in Daily Sun, be ready for a lot of shoppers then count you money!

Hey Sage...#3 what is the legal process to make a homeowner running a sale responsible for all ensuing damage?

I was not aware of some of these "rules" concerning garage sales, other than the no signs/balloons only thing, and yes -- any damage should be the responsibility of the person having the sale.

I thought garage sales were supposed to be fun and a way to clean out unwanted items that others probably want or could use.
You know -- the old rule of "One man's trash is another man's treaure."

Well, I can think of no other way to put it. These rules . . . are we living under Gestapo rule???
Garage sales really hurt no one and these rules seem a little intense.

What about estate sales?
The people who hold them are pretty much the same all the time.
How come these rules don't apply to them?
Only one garage sale a year???
Would two or even three really hurt anyone?

No real need to stir up the pot.

Don't know of any Gestapo like people who have ever challenged anyone for having stuff in their driveway in the years that we have been here. I do say if you are going to any garage sale, be prepared for almost the entire population of The Villages to be there. ( and folks from off campus too)

P.S. I am a HUGE fan of all of our deed restrictions.

And is there a community watch to see how many sales an individual has in one year or do the neighbors report this gross misdemeanor?
