Default Yamaha keys all the same...

I was surprised to find out that all Yamaha Golf Cart glove box keys were equivalent. My golfing partner demonstrated that his key would work on the Yamaha we were driving. It WORKED! So much for a secure storage area.

The same goes with some or most of the golf cart ignition keys. Just a couple of days ago, a buddy demonstrated that his parcar key would work in mine.

For many years prior to becoming a popular mode of transportation golf carts were manufactured and sold primarily to golf courses. If they keyed each individually the golf courses would go nuts trying to keep track of which key fit which cart as well as chasing after golfers who automatically pocketed the keys. (I don't know why they didn't just install an "on/off" switch.) Evidently they have not changed their policy to address the general public (read, "The Villages") market.

You can purchase after market keyed locks.

Our Yamaha key is unique to our cart. Don't know about the glove box, but thanks for letting everyone know that they could be the same.

This is pretty much common information. In fact there was a big article in the Orlando Sentinel and the Daily Sun about a golf cart chop shop in Traveres (or was it Eustis) and they said the keys are interchangeable.

You either have to order a cart with a unique key or put one in after the fact.
Some carts have a kill switch so the cart cannot be started if the switch is in th off position. It is usually hidden so only you know about it.

When I bought my Yamaha gas I was told the ignition keys were different, but the glove boxes were all the same.

I remember also being told the ignition keys were different and don't remember what was said about the glove box. I did not have to request a different key to turn it on.

Default Call the golf cart stores, they can help

The store that has a booth @ Marion Markets (flea market) sells the glove box locks for $15 including keys. You can get matching locks. The ignition key switch in only an on/off switch so can be changed very easily. Any golf cart store can help.
OH, and another thing, anyone who wants to STEAL your cart could care less about your "locks". They'll get it.

Default Others keys work as well

My husband and I went to see some pro golfers at the senior open one year. Trying to be cute- he told me he could take the golf cart and we could ride instead of walk (parking lot was quite far away). I kept walking, but sure enough he pulled up next to me in the cart ....before he put it back.

He used his key to the Hi Lo he drove at work.....

I received a call today from our salesman at Carts and Clubs to let us know that our cart will be ready ahead of schedule... about two weeks to go. While talking with him I asked about the key/glove box issue being discussed.

He told me that Yahama uses 10 different dash boards and the one they use at C&C can have one of two possible keys. That alone makes it a 50/50 chance that another CG owner would have a matching key. If you add the other 9 dashboards to the mix that would come out to a one in 11 chance or even greater if any of the other 9 also use two different keys.

What's even more interesting is that he told me that if the wrong key is inserted into the key slot, the key will be locked in and lock itself would probably have to be replaced. BTW, here is a naked picture of our new GC... in progress. They're just waiting for the seat to complete the job.
