Default Wood Flooring over Tile Floor

I never cared for the tile iflooing n my Lantana. The bedrooms are carpeted.

I was told that it's possible to install engineered wood flooring over the tile. This has my interest as the idea of removing tile to put in any floor makes me shudder!

Has anyone with tile flooring replaced it with wood flooring? Is it true that the existing tile doesn't need to be taken up?

If you used a floating floor, it would probably work. With a glue down product, if the underlying tile came loose, you could have a problem.

Default Wood Floor Over Tile

Home Depot's contractor installed Pergo Laminate over tile in our kitchen. Looks great and has been in for a year with no problems.

One of our neighbors had it installed over tile and it is beautiful. There is no way to tell. Floors R US (just north of the Marion Markets) did the job. They also took down the baseboard and reinstalled it after the flooring was put down. It looks great and there is no need for quarter round. Nice clean job.

Use floating floor over glued. Wood laminates are better than faux finishes. Save some extra for damage repair if needed. It can be easily fixed or even completely removed later. The wood finishes will darken over time - called ''tanning.'' It's normal, but if you leave furniture in the same place for a long time, then rearrange, you'll see the difference especially if exposed to sunlight. Floating floors are slightly louder than glued when you walk on them with shoes. But the benefits of floating outweigh the glued floor by a long shot. It's even not a bad DIY project.

I spoke to a few local floor shops including Floors R Us. Two told me it could be done but it's a lot of work. Floors R Us said they woudln't do it because eventually the glue would give under the floor and that presents a major problem.

I don't want laminate, I wanted engineered flooring. When I went on line to check it out, most sites say it can be done but Floors R Us discouraged me.

Has anyone used engineered wood instead of laminate or do you know anyone who had it done with success. Who did they use?

Nancy, I am just starting my quest for hardwood. I want to use 3/4" Brazilian teak but need to find out the pros and cons of using hardwood here in TV. Why have you chosen engineered wood over regular wood?

I have wood "engineered" floors put in throughout my house. Floormasters on 310 did the job for me. I was told that they only do engineered floors here in Florida. In Los Angeles, I had real wood floors but something about the humidity or weather or something, makes them only use engineered wood here. Don't know if this is true but that's what they told me.

Engineered floors are very thin and are applied with glue to the slab and they are prefabricated with the finish in the factory. I was told that they would dent very easily since they are so thin and that the dogs would scratch the surface with their claws. I haven't seen this so far, and I have them now for 1 1/2 years.

I can't say that I like them better than solid wood but it was better than having carpets which is impossible with 3 dogs. I would definitely do it again but I feel a bit hesitant about putting these engineered floors right over tile, I can't explain why, I just feel its too make shift, but then again, not an expert, just a packaging engineer who would be concerned about gluing something onto a tile finished surface. Somehow I don't think the long term permanency would be there.... Just my opinion.

Good luck, and Sam if you find someone who will do solid wood, let me know for my next house. Thanks...K.

I heard the same thing about putting "real" hardwood floors in FL homes. I'm not a fan of engineered wood but I'll take that over laminate.

My issue is the tile - to take it out would be a horror show and I'm not about to go through that. I had the same conerns about gluing the floor to tile and I'm pretty sure floating the floor woudln't work.

So, it looks like I am stuck with this floor that I "hate". It's not the tile as much as it's the color. I like tile floors, just not this color. Now I understand that you have choices! Last year, I was limited to a package and even those "packages" were not the best choices.
