Default Wind Mitigation Inspection - Don Meyler Inspections

Has anyone had a Wind Mitigation Inspection done by Don Melyer Inspections ?? OUr Home Owners insurance has recommended we obtain such a report in the "hopes" of reducing our homeowner insurance costs ...which just went up 23% this renewal period. The cost of such inspection is normally $150 but through our insurance company its only $95.

-- Have you had such an inspection?
-- Who did it?
-- Cost
-- What were your savings if any on homeowners insurance??

We had the wind inspection done several years ago. It was a FREE inspection, at that time.
Submitted the results to the insurance company, but they gave NO reduction. The link below is to the progam we used. The program no longer exists.

Yes, but I just wanted to let you know that we did NOT get a reduction on our insurance.
It will be interesting to see how many people actually got a reduction.

Something smells fishy. Did the ins co just recommend this one company or have several to choose from?

We had a wind mitigation done in April by DJ inspections. I believe it cost about $100 and it gave us a reduction of approximately $150 a year for our Southern Fidelity Insurance. The inspection is good for 5 years according to the inspection report. If I read our policy correct, there is a difference in percentage rate discounts for houses built after 2001, ours was built in 1999.

Yes they only recommended the one company but I was able to go to anyone certified to do such inspections...and probably pay the higher price. They are comming out monday so I sould know if any reduction will occur by the end of the month. I dont think I am risking anything by going with the
insurance companies recommendation!! What do you smell!

And YES pre and post 2001 built homes were built to different hurricane standards in the state of Florida..ours is 2006 and the new standards may already be factored into our rate..but not to the full extent allowed!

Default Hip Roof

Be sure your insurance company is aware if you have a hip roof. Saved me about $ 100 a year!

From what I understand the inspection includes a report on the type of roof (Hip etc), strapping method used for the roof sheating, type of shingle, any secondary water protection, Type of windows and any additional protection affforded (shutters, projectile resistant film etc) as well as other issues.

I have been a home inspector for 14 years. A wind mitigation verification can be done by a state licensed home inspector that has a certificate proving they have passed the wind mitigation course. I tell all my customers that if they don't get a discount after having a wind mit inspection I will refund the cost of the inspection ($150). I had my personal house inspected and recieved $350 discount per year and my house was built in 1963! All houses built before 2001 should get one. The inspection covers roof geometry(hip or gable), age of roof, how the roof is fastened(clips or straps), type of sheathing used, size of trusses(2x4, 24' OC), secondary water resistance (mostly newer roofs), roof nailing size and pattern and opening protection(hurricane shutters)
