Default The White Pelicans

I was quite fascinated when I first read about these birds on TOTV and very excited when I first spotted them after crossing 441/27 on the golf cart bridge and came upon a body of water they were gathered in.

Well, imagine my delight today while sitting on my lanai, and a flock of these magnificent birds fly over my home in the Village of Hadley. Quite a sight - so of course I had to google it. Turns out by this time they have normally started their migration north, but I'm guessing they must watch the weather channel and have figured they need to hold on a while longer.

Wish we had the instincts the animal kingdom has been blessed with!

Oh, and what I learned when I googled them is they are called "snowbirds"!

They have been hanging around, on & off, for the last week or so in the pond behind Havana CC and the pond on Kilimanjaro hole #1.

We saw them too this afternoon while we were in our pool. We're also in Hadley. There were 5 of them. However because they were that high up we couldn't tell exactly what they looked like, so we weren't sure what we were seeing at the time except that they were fairly large birds. I hear a song coming on! Where's Michael Buble when you need him?

We've loved having the pelicans around for most of the winter. Watching them "group fish" is so much fun.

I counted almost 40 today on the retention pond on the 6th hole of the Amelia course. They were in a tight cluster and moved around the perimeter of the pond together. Love to watch them fly in and skim land. I'm surprised at how long they have stayed.

my friends in Sterling, Illinois, have spotted the white pelicans on the
Rock River, behind their house. They have been going there (probably on their way further north) for several years.

They are quite spectacular.

Default Poem by Ogden Nash

A wonderful bird is the pelican,
His bill can hold more than his beli-can.
He can take in his beak
Food enough for the week;
But I'm damned if I see how the heli-can.
