Just called BJ’s was advised to come to the store between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. with your receipt to be reimbursed for the gas, fill out paperwork and “corporate will take care of the rest”. She could not explain the “take care” part.

This is the BJ’s on Northeast 86th Path. 352-829-4535

Won’t hurt your car (if it is a gasoline-burner).

A couple of cars ago we had a 2008 Kia. One evening my wife called me; she had pulled into a station and had gassed up with diesel fuel instead of gasoline (filled at about half a tank). She was terrified that she had ruined the car. I told her not to worry; that half a tank of diesel mixed with gas would make it run like an old tractor but she’d be able to get it home. She did. Fortunately not many hills as it had very little power. But as we gradually added gas the performance got better; inside of two weeks you couldn’t tell it had any diesel fuel in it at any time.

Neighbors did comment on the smell though.

I drove by the one on 441 next to Lowes today. Several tankers there doing what I assume removing the contaminated fuel? Didn't have time to stop and ask.

Diesel and gasoline are different types of fuel, and an engine that operates with one type isn’t compatible with the other fuel. So, what happens when you put diesel in a gas engine? Just putting diesel fuel into a gasoline car is bad enough. Attempting to drive a vehicle with diesel in a gas engine will cause it to stall as soon as diesel reaches the intake system, potentially clogging the fuel lines and damaging the engine.

What Happens When You Put Diesel in a Gas Engine?

Diesel is thicker than gasoline, and the more viscous fuel can clog and damage a gas engine’s injection system and other components. If you catch yourself putting diesel in a gas car, here’s what to do (and not do):

Do not start the engine. It’s crucial to keep the diesel in the tank and not let it into the fuel lines and cause damage.
Do not panic. Mixing the two fuels is not, by itself, dangerous.
Immediately call a dealership or local repair shop. Arrange for an emergency tow to get your vehicle to the service center.
A mechanic will drain and rinse the gas tank to remove diesel and its residue. If you didn’t start the engine, that’s the only service necessary. However, additional work may be needed if you drove with diesel in the gas tank. If you ran the engine until it stalled, technicians will likely:

Flush the fuel line
Service the fuel injector system
Check the fuel pump for damage
Replace the fuel filter

Personal experience says the above is questionable. Didn't hurt the '08 Kia a bit at about a 50-50 mix. Gas-burners won't run at all on 100% diesel but I'm here to tell ya that the only injury a 50-50 mix causes is to one's ego. Can't answer for any mix with more than about 50% diesel.

Everyone is right. Diesel can hurt fuel filters and injectors. If you run on it diluted for a short time it may not cause any noticeable harm. But it could lessen the life of your fuel filter and cause injectors to need servicing sooner than later. But it may not cause any problems. Modern cars will likely stall as the computer basically knows there is something wrong with ignition. This will likely save those with newer cars. Hopefully most people come out of this unscathed financially.

If this was reversed(gas in a diesel) very different outcome.

Thank you for sharing and including the BJ's at Lady Lake phone number

I just called. According to Cathy, they responded to the potential problem on 08/26/23 in the evening. The window of those potentially effected were 08/26/23 between the hours of 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm.

I told her that I topped off my tank on 08/28/23 at 12:28pm with premium. She said, "Then, you're ok; you're good!"

I hope sharing my experience is helpful to others.
