I noticed some of the street signs are black letering on a white background, while others are white lettering on a green background. Do you know the signifigance of the color of the signs?

Guessing ... could it be that the signs are in different counties - Marion, Sumter, Lake.

In Marion County the colors of the street sign tell you if it is a county road or not. But they did not change the old street signs to agree with this policy so hard to tell. The reason is so you know who to call for road repairs.

I would bet that the green signs are the newer ones and have "mixed case" lettering, and the white signs with black letters are all upper-case, and are the older signs. Municipalities were given some latitude and are not required to replace the older signs but all new street signs must adhere to the Recent Federal standards. I think Janet Tutt mentioned this at a POA meeting several years ago. At that time I was surprised that the Feds would care about local street signs.

Also, the black and white signs seemed to be stacked (as they all should be) and the green ones are not. We were riding through the new section in FP and noticed the main entrance street had black and white signs while the side streets had green non-stacked. Wondered why.

I do not know the significance but it seems that the black with white are on more of the main roads where as the green with white are on the side roads. This is how it seems to be South of 466A.

If true, I think it is ridicules that the federal government is involved in telling local communities what color their street signs should be. Another case of overreach.

I don't like any unnecessary government involvement in anything. But standardized street sign specifications assure legibility and have merit.

If you've ever traveled in Puerto Rico, you may have noticed their chaotic highway exits and street signage, which shows what happens when no central authority imposes standards. I'm thankful for the consistency we enjoy traveling throughout the USA. We take it all for granted.
