Default Rust on Fridge door?

We just got in last night after a 3 month stint away and found that there was rust on the vinyl skin of our Whirlpool fridge. The house was set at 81 with the dehumidistat at 55 so it was a dry heat. We left the fridge on as we had last summer. Has anyone else had this problem?

It looks like something caused the metal door to rust and the rust ate through the vinyl and left a pitted residue on the outside. I googled and discovered that this has happened to many others regardless of the manufacturer. Even the stainless steel appliances started rusting so there was some talk about the metal not being truly stainless. There doesn't seem to be any support from the companies that either sold or made the refrigerators.

I was wondering if anyone has come up with a solution other than to replace the fridge. Thanks for any input.

I believe this could be caused by the setting on your refrigerator. You need to keep case heater on to prevent condensation forming on the outside of the refrigerator. That means turning the energy saver switch off. With the temperature in your home set to 81, condensation can form on the outside of the box.
