We're moving to our house in The Villages in the next few months and are considering, after a hiatus of 25+ years, trying the ancient and noble sport of bowling. Trouble is, when we recently tried a game or two, we found that somebody had snuck into our bags over the years and added a bunch of weight to the balls. My 16-pounder has to weigh upwards of 30 now, I swear!

So it's time for new balls, I suppose (though the shoes still fit and look surprisingly good!). Is there a preference amongst those in the know as to the best place to get outfitted? I believe there are two main alleys in TV. Is one considered better in this area than the other? Or are there outside sources that might be even better?

Keep in mind that we are not terribly serious bowlers yet. Our goal, after all, is to one day possibly aspire to mediocrity in this area. Think "social bowlers on a budget."

Both bowling centers are run by the same family, the Ducats. (Fiesta Bowl and Spanish Springs Lanes).

Inside each is a pro shop staffed by guys that have been professional bowlers on the National PBA tour. They all do a pretty good job. Nick Panicaro oversees both pro shops.

Also, there is another independent pro shop about 5 to 6 miles from the centers. It is called RSW Pro Shop. Rob Wiltse owns it and he is also pretty good.

The technology of today is significantly better for the bowling balls of today. You really should upgrade, even if your old equipment wasn't too heavy. For men, it's pretty unusual to see them still throwing 16 lbs.

I recommend RWS Pro shop on Guava street (off 441, just North of 466, on the right side of 441 going North). Rob has new and used balls, with used ones much cheaper, and probably a better choice initially. Take in your old balls (if you can still lift them ).
He is very good, and added 30 pins to my average with his recommendations.

If you're not a serious league bowler or expert billiards player, there's no need to rush out and buy equipment. It is provided for both sports and is more than adequate. You are going to have much more important things to occupy your time than shopping for pool cues and bowling balls. Your choice in sports may change 3 times before you've been here a year.

As mentioned above, there are balls and shoes available at the bowling alleys. Personally, I never liked lane shoes, they seem to stick a lot. I agree completely about your needs changing, but the reason I suggested a USED ball is that this will give you a consistent starting point. Rob will try to give you a ball that will initially be suitable for the way you are currently throwing the ball. As you pick up your game, then you can change balls as necessary.
The are a large variety of balls, and Rob is very good at this. Please do not buy a ball on how it looks, you buy a ball based on the way it will move (hook) or not move (straight), depending on how you throw the ball.
PS I am up to the low 170's on 2 leagues, lower on the third, due to the different oil patterns.

The Spanish Springs Lanes has an area where TVers can drop off their old bowling balls that are then used by a league for disabled bowlers and/or youth bowling leagues. Great way to recycle and give back.

That is great to know. We'll bring down the old balls and leave it with them.

I have rather large hands and fingers and can almost never find balls at lanes that fit me.

I just never like to wear other people's shoes and last I checked, mine still seem to fit.
