It may be a Gopher Tortoise. If so, they are protected.

We did it ourselves. We collected our used coffee grounds. We carefully identified where their little tunnels were and then we poured the used coffee grounds into the tunnels and around the outside of it. It took a few days, but it worked and they haven't come back. You can also buy some smoke bombs at Ace hardware too if you want to go that route.

Poke a couple of holes along their tunnels, drop in a mothball and pour in a little ammonia and a little bleach and cover the hole. The gas reaction of the 2 liquids should kill them, and the continuing stink of the mothball will keep others away or at least drive them into the neighbor's yard if not killed.

Better cover the hole quick. Bleach and ammonia=hydrochloric acid and chlorine gas. (toxic)
