How does one correctly dispose of paint here in The Villages? Several half filled cans left by previous owners...

If it is latex paint, just let it dry out and put it in the regular trash.

Fill The can with kitty litter and leave the lid off… then let it go to the dump, they will burn it for electricity

That does not appear to be permitted in our part of the Villages. We are having the same questions. We USED to be able to fill partial cans with sand, and have it picked up. Then our waste company changed and the waste is now (apparently ?) all being burned and the particulates all go into the air for everyone to breath, so paint, batteries, and a host of other materials (and rightfully so !) are no longer permitted in our "trash". We now have 3 FULL boxes of just household batteries, smoke alarm batteries, flashlight, etc. etc. We've inquired at several big box stores, they do not take them. What does one do with pressurized cans; whip cream, hair spray, spray paint, etc. now that we can't put them into the trash (the company says they will explode and damage the waste incinerator). We have been here many years and have found few negatives with the community, but.... it is THE most lackadaisical we have ever lived in in regard to hazardous waste, medical waste, lead, bio-hazards, and recycling. We found it very surprising in light of the fact that Florida in general, is extremely environmentally aware state that appreciates protecting the environment. It's very puzzling ?

Sumter County has periodic amnesty days. Their latest one was last Saturday.

You have lived here for many years and don't know about the hazardous waste amnesty days that have been going on for years? You can take your qualified stuff twice a year. Not a lackadaisical community when it comes to hazardous waster, just lackadaisical residents who don't participate and actually put their hazardous waste in their garbage.

I had a bunch of paint to dispose of before moving from Baton Rouge. After much research, I found that Habitat for Humanity (the store in Baton Rouge was called "Restore") "gladly" takes used cans of <good> paint. Just a thought. Not sure if there are any of those around TV or not...

Depends on the Couny you reside. In Sumter County, about once a quarter, they collect hazardous waste in particular collection points. Go to your County waste management homepage and search about it.

We bought a small packet of paint thickener at Home Depot . Easy to use. Put
out during trash pickup. We left top off.

You need to educate yourself on the waste to energy process used by Covanta, (the company that incinerates our solid waste in their Lake County facility). It is much more environmentally friendly than typical recycling programs plus aids in lowering electrical costs. For hazardous waste, the county has allocated days for drop off throughout the year.

Lady Lake has a recycling and trash drop off station off Rolling Acres just south of 466. It is Jackson Rd. Open Tues. and Sat. 9-5. They take just about everything.

The best way to solidify paint is to put it in the garage, for the specific reason of using it down the road for touch-ups. Every can I've wanted to use for this reason has been hard as a rock when I go to reuse it
