Unhappy Movie Theatres

Finally, a movie, Oppenheimer that I would like to see. 30 minute drive to Sumter Landing or longer to Leesburg AMC. Not interested in an hour or more round trip. YES, I am lazy (as many may point out so I saved you the effort) and retired and drove plenty back and forth from work.

I will wait until I can rent it online although I love the big screen and acoustics.

However, I am 10 min from Brownwood.

Developer: PLEASE REOPEN THIS THEATRE. WE HAVE THOUSANDS MORE PEOPLE SOUTH OF 44 AND WE NEED THIS THEATRE.

I just don't get it. It is already there and had been in use until Covid. It will bring people to Brownwood square to spend $ at the restaurants etc. You have tons of golf courses but here is something we really need and you only have a movie theatre in Sumter landing.....

The last time I was at Brownwood there was a sign at the Box Office stating the theater is permanently closed.

I sure it movie house was money maker like it use to be someone would be leasing theater. Developers I sure would be happy to lease it. But, in todays market nobody want to take risk when just as you say why go when you can rent it.

The Villages Developers probably do not make any money on their golf courses but they market them as there biggest selling point. EDITED.

They did correct that!

One or two watchable films a year will not get business people queuing to reopen loss making movie theaters.
I wouldn't waste fuel, or even free entry for most of the film dross on offer.

I get that movie theatres don't make as much money as they used to. How much does it cost them to leave the building empty like this for how long? Why not open it, or even half of it while you are working on your plans to redevelop it. You can make a little money on something you wouldn't otherwise and to the other points, help the other businesses around it at the same time. Look at the growth you are expecting at Middleton and the surrounding area....

The Villages is a unique market with many people who have grown up watching movies. There is a demand here.

You cannot get the sound, smell, feel of a real movie theater in your home theater no matter how big the screen.

I went to many movies here in the Villages at all three theaters when there were very few seats open. One movie I recall had EVERY seat taken.

It is not about the money but about the marketing that said they had three open movie theaters. They did correct that though.

Concession day in TV had more people in theaters, rest of week was dead.
I grew up watching movies from Hollywood.
It was the few things that gave us hope in the post WW2 aftermath, that things would get better.

Until one of the residents decides to come out of retirement and run them, or some entrepreneur figures out a profitable business model, the theaters will not reopen.

Too many simply don't have any idea how to run a profitable move theater.

Hollywood is partially to blame, too, as they require a certain $$$ gross the first few weeks of a screening.

Heck, established theaters across the US have been closing or abandoning theaters.

Viewers simple aren't willing to pay enough to keep them open.
