Default Motorized Solar Shades

We have decided to add motorized solar shades to our enclosed lanai. What advice do those of you have this type shade have for us? What do you like/not like about them? What were the pros and cons of the company you used? Thanks in advance for your help.

Default We love our sunscreens!!!

We had four sunscreens installed on our lanai, which has a southern exposure. They were done by Lonnie with Cool Breeze Screens. We highly recommend him/them. We use them everyday and has transformed our use of the lanai to more of a useful extension of the living area.

The screens keep out heat, some light, bugs, dirt, and a lot of rain (but not all rain). When down, from the outside they look like a wall; from the inside you can see out. They protect our outdoor rugs and furniture and give us privacy and an added level of security, as we keep these down at night.

The only con is frogs. Three of the four screens are inside the lanai cage. One is on the exterior, over the cage screen. The screen on the exterior has somehow become an attractant to frogs, (appx. fist sized), which must be getting into the housing cover. Periodically, when we lower this screen, there are one or more very flat frogs glued to the screen. And then we scrape them off. Yes, we are frog killers and will take any suggestions for the removal of sticky frog residue from woven screens.

Aside from the one con, we do love our screens and couldn't imagine not having them on our lanai!

Do they make motorized shades for inside the house? I am looking for something for the bedroom that affords sufficient privacy, but that I can raise from the bed to watch the sun come up. Where can I get something like that? Is it expensive?

You should call Stormy at RK Products. He is a Village resident...small company but provides a great product at a reasonable price.

You will not appreciate motorized shades until you need to use them....they are wonderful...not cheap but well worth the price.

Our shades are inside (Glassed in lanai) with the rollers covered by a 4-5 inch valance flush with the wall.

We have them on our Lanai and love them. Get several quotes because you will find the price can vary quite a bit. Since they are electric you want to find out what the warranty is on the motors. I think ours is 5 yrs. The fabric is pretty much the same with all companies. We got a denser fabric to help keep rain out. My sister got a less dense because they are on a golf course and wanted to be able to see out better when the shades are down.

Check out the motorized Sun Setter shades from Costco. Widths are in 1 foot increments and they are frequently on sale. The UPS delivery man gave us the phone number of Bear (yes that's his nickname) and he installed four shades on the inside of our Florida Room. Very reasonably priced and we are very pleased with them. Limited sizes and colors but if you can live with that you will be pleased.

Another vote for RK Products! We have interior motorized screens and love them! We even have a dual shade in our bedroom - one for the sun shade and one for a blackout. Both are motorized. As a joke, my husband will sit in Starbucks and lower the shades from his iPhone. Love them!

Default Semi DIY

If you are willing to do some of the ordering work yourself, the path we used may be of interest:

1. Have Norm, The Blind Man, measure the windows for you
2. Order the motorized shades on-line. We used Shadesshuttersblinds.com
3. Have Norm install them for you.

The shades we used have Somfy motors and are of a good quality, For the large windows in the lanai, I suggest you consider 110V motors. For the door in the lanai or windows in the house, the battery powered (8 Li AA batteries) or 12V power supply is adequate.

We installed sunshades in the lanai and blackout shades elsewhere in the house (the blackout shades fit between the window and plantation shutters). You can buy handheld remotes or an interface to convert the Somfy wireless format to Z-Wave to connect to a home automation system, which we have done.

For the 110V shades in the lanai, we had an electrician run power from the breaker box to surface mounted conduit and outlets above the lanai windows. Then we had Creative Custom Carpentry construct a cornice to cover the conduits and outlets.

PM me if you want more information or to take a look at our installation.

Don
