Default Mail Hold

Just a quick question. We will be away for a couple weeks and need to put a "hold" on the mail. Do I go to the postal station and tell them, or can I just go online thru USPS and do it? TIA

I agree. Go online to Usps.com. Easy peasy.

We just put a note in our mail slot and she holds it until we get back, for 2 weeks your slot will most likely hold everything if you tell them to get rid of junk mail. We recently got back from a 3 week trip and all was well.

If you put a USPS mail hold on it you will have to go to the Lady Lake PO to pick it up. Just leave a note in your mailbox and they will hold it locally for you if your box fills up with junk mail. I get maybe 2 or 3 "actual" mail pieces a month because virtually everything is by email but our box fills up in a week with all the get free lunch cremation and money management advertisements. I could probably get at least 3 free meals every week just to hear about getting french fried or what to do with the millions I do not have when I die.

Check on line and the program will tell you if you can make the request on line. You will be able to have mail delivered when you get back or you can go to the PO.
I have had them deliver mail in error so you might want someone to check your mail box.
You can also sign up to see what mail is being delivered every day. This is separate from the hold.

We also just put a note in our mail box if it is only for 2 weeks. If it gets too full, they will put the mail in a separate box and give it all to you when you return. We let them know when we will be back. Never had a problem!

Your mail people have a yellow form that they will give you to fill out. After filling out the form, leave it in your mailbox a couple of days before leaving.

Word of caution---make sure you get all your mail when you return. knock on door and ask when postal workers are there. we were gone for two weeks-picked up the mail in our box which was crammed full. Realized we were missing some mail that should have been received after picking up mail daily for at least a week. There was a box in the floor under our box with lots of our missing mail (one of which was a refund check that we had reissued) and our "yellow" hold card-- This also happened to one of our neighbors.

Always do it online and never had a problem except the box is so jammed full when you pick it up it is difficult to get it out without tearing some mail.

We just returned after being away for 12 days. As previously stated, we put a note in our box and mail was held until we returned. We put a note in when we got home, and the next day our mail including meds and a small package were in one of the bigger parcel boxes, with the key on our box. I wouldn't involve the post office unless gone for an extended period of time.

This is not true. We always put our mail on hold via usps.com We never have to go to the Lady Lake PO to get it.

Champion6 is correct. When going online to hold mail, one of the options is to have the mail delivered to your box on the date you specify. When we return, we knock on the door and the carrier gives us a box of mail that they’ve saved for us.

Thanks for the info. I think I will just leave a note in the mailbox, and see what happens. Our first trip will only be for ten days, but our second will be almost a month.
