How are the inside walls of the garage finished on a new home? If they are drywall has anyone covered the walls with a stronger material after moving in?

Depends on the type of house...

A concrete block stucco (CBS) house....the garage walls are block

A frame house...they are drywall.

In our case, the garage door also has reinforced braces to make it better withstand hurricane force winds. I believe this is pretty common in new construction.

Just curious. If it is frame construction then the garage wall would be similar to the house wall, right? 2 X 4 or 2 X 6 studs with drywall inside and plywood (or similar) outside covered with siding. Why wouldn't it be as strong as the house walls?

Or are you doing something in the garage that requires more strength?

In my garage (Gardenia) the outside walls are block, but the walls adjacent to interior section of the house (kitchen, laundry room, master bath) are drywall.

russ, the reinforcements v07 is referring to are strictly on the metal garage door, they are there too keep it from buckling in strong winds.....gn

It is a frame house so they will be drywall. The walls just get beat up with tools and such and the paint job gets lots of abuse with drywall. Didn't know if you folks down that way had something like nudo board or something you would recommend putting over the drywall in the garage to keep the wall more intact from car doors and lawn mowers and shovels falling against them.

The frame homes are drywall and it is finished (taped and painted).

Most of us down here in TV do not have lawn mowers and we left our snow shovels up north.

Be aware that in most frame houses, all interior walls can be metal studs and all outside walls are wood -- this is true of the garage also -- it gets a little tricky if you want to nail or hang heavy items on inside walls -- interior walls are the contractors choice of wood or metal in most all TV homes -- FYI -- Lucko

I am sure I could go to Lowes and get instructions on how to hang things from cement walls, but other than using concrete nails, which is quite difficult, and possibly unsightly, how do the rest of you out there in TV land do this?

For a few holes you can just use a masonry bit, but for a larger project a hammer drill is the best way to go through block or concrete walls.

Make sure you have the fasteners and the correct size drill bit before starting the project.
