Default Indoor Tick Problem

Hi TV folks,

My mom lives in TV (Lake Sumter area) and has a dog that ended up bringing ticks into the house.

The dog has been treated (tick bath, Advantix), and the house has been treated several times now, but these things are still showing up. It's maddening to her, of course, as no one wants ticks in their house.

She's used two pest control services now. The current service provider's people seem competent and all, but this is now a chronic problem. No, I'm not talking about "hundreds" of ticks...but every so often now she'll find two or three living ones, which means there's more there.

The place has been cleaned from top to bottom (all linens, curtains, etc., washed in hot water several times and vacuuming galore!)

Questions: Has anyone on the forum here dealt with this problem, and if so, what did you end up doing to remedy it? Are ticks a big problem in TV?

Thanks for any help, as she's at her wits end on getting this thing dealt with once and for all.

Note: The current pest control service has come a few times now -- once to start the process and once to "break the life cycle". They were just there again after my Mom found a few more living ticks on the carpet (again, a few...not an infestation!).

Default fleas and ticks

Fleas and ticks are a real problem this year. All the groomers and vets in our area were talking about it.

I of course washed everything and vacuumed.

I found a spray that is highly recommended at one of the petstores online... Petco or Petsmart??? Can't remember. I sprayed all the cloth furniture, pillows, etc. THEN.... I sprayed the yard!!!! Until I sprayed the yard, they kept coming back!

They are all gone now!!!

Hi Angie,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, the yard option was the last thing to try, as prior to that the pest services were treating the house perimeter and inside.

The current service did tell us (I was there last month) that if these things kept showing up, a one-time yard treatment would be in order. I will check with my Mom to see if that took place, as the service provider was supposed to be there yesterday or today.

If you can remember the name of that spray and post it, I'd appreciate it. But thanks for posting what you did, regardless.

Sorry... I don't and I packed it away! I remember it got at least four stars.

I did the inside and outside twice 30 days apart!

Had this problem with a collie I take care of. Problem wasn't that there were ticks in the house, problem was the dog was bringing them back home -- she likes to do her business in pine straw, which is notorious for having ticks. They got her one of the special tick collars from the vet and no more ticks within three weeks.

Default Ticks HATE Vinegar

In my HUMBLE opinion........

Inspect Pet for ticks...Take a cloth DAMPENED with White Vinegar.
..(.BEFORE you enter the Home.)......
Touch the TICK ....They RELEASE immediately.
...Works on Humans, also.

By The Way, (BTW)......
If you put a bit of white vinegar IN the Pet's WATER.
.....( start with 3 drops and increase gradually)
no bugs, ants or foamy scum will enter the water...
.......AND the TICKS won't bite them and "attach".

....If the Ticks DON'T "attach"......problem solved....
( pet do not like the water at first....but...after a few weeks
they don't like water without the WHITE Vinegar.

SECONDARY benefit of Vinegar, joint pain goes away.
........YUP....works for humans, also.

Humans and Pets can be rubbed with a Vinegar cloth and
walk in the brambles and weeds and shady woods,
without being "kissed" by skeeters, ticks and hornets or bees........
( just don't carry sweets or gum to keep bees and hornets away).
......ALL above gleaned from PERSONAL experience..Take it or Leave it...

We had ticks in the house a few years ago. We were using Advantix at the time, but the ticks still rode in on the dog's. The Advantix will kill a tick once it bites, but can reproduce in the meantime. Spoke to the vet and the first thing she said was don't wait to get rid of them since they multiply quickly. Look at the ceiling where the wall and ceiling come together. Ticks like to live there. We found them hiding out there. We ended up "bombing" the house 8 weeks in a row (yes, 8!) before they were totally gone. It was a hassle, but worth it for them not to overrun the house. We, too, had sprayed the yard several times. Vet also said if they get into the attic (which they love) it is nearly impossible to get rid of them. So, keep at it and don't let those nasty buggers win! Good luck!

Our tick problem was solved when both of our dogs died however they were both over 17 years old. We never did completely get rid of the ticks

This discussion scares me. Ticks cause lime disease aside from their annoyance. What is the preventitive way to get rid of them? Spray the yard and the house before you move in? And are you saying it is those pine needle looking things around the edging of the lawn in between the bushes that I see we have at our new Mission Hills Hacienda villa that breeds them? I never heard of ticks being a problem in Florida and we have two dogs who are moving with us of the larger breeds. I want to get on this well in advance, for us and the dogs. Ugh. We have a half acre in Seattle and no ticks.

This wasn't a Florida problem this year. I live in the Chicago area. This was a country wide problem because of the weather.

I had changed my dogs meds and have since gone back to their old meds. I think that should do the trick!

We have a home in TV and live mostly in Cape Coral. About 4 years ago, our lab brought a few ticks into our Cape Coral house. I tried a flee and tick collar and bought spray products for the lawn at home depot and lowes. None of this worked. The problem lasted about 4 months. Each day and night we checked our home and the dog for ticks. We would find only a few here and there, but it still was annoying. Finally, our vet told us about a product called Comfortus. It is a tablet taken once a month. Also, at about the same time, I was told that none of the retail sprays or other products really work. The person advised me to go to our local industrial park and purchase the granuals that the professionals use. I immediately picked up a 40 lb bag and spread it on my lawn. The combination of the Comfortus and the professional strength product eliminated the problem. We have never had another tick in the home or on the dog. GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Lyme disease is spread by deer ticks not dog ticks. It is a very rare disease to be caught in Florida with only 15 to 25 cases a year in the state in the 90's (last data I could find)
