Default Handicap Parking in Golf Carts

Was doing a Lifestyle Visit last month and have a question. Do Golf Carts have Handicap tags? I know cars have plates or hanging tags. I see a lot of Golf Carts in handicap spots and I didn't notice any visible tags. Could be maybe I just missed them.

Don't know about parking but I do know that some golfers, those with physical handicaps in mobility, can obtain a tag that allows them to drive their carts onto the turf on executive courses. I've not seen one close up; a small red tag, maybe? Possibly that tag can be used for parking in handicapped spaces as well.

The law states you need a handicapped permit to park a golf cart in a designated handicapped space. However, it appears that there are problems associated with displaying such a tag-----namely, they get stolen. I've seen some people tape the placard in such a way as to make it more difficult to steal, but certainly not foolproof. Others photocopy the placard and tape that to their windshields, and yet others just park there. Then there are those that are not handicapped and park there anyway. But to address the last poster, the RA tag you can get to drive near greens and off the cart paths on golf courses is NOT a permit to park in a handicapped spot. If anyone who has a handicapped permit thinks what I've posted is wrong, please correct me.

GE, yes you are right
I would add…

The Villages Course Access Pass (CAP) policy

Course Access Pass cards will be issued only to those individuals who have a state certified disabled parking permit. A valid handicap placard, along with a driver’s license and registration will need to be presented to the Golf Administration offices to obtain or renew a CAP Card.

We both have mobility issues so when getting our first placard the question was asked if golf-carts also can have them. The answer was yes!!! Despite what "some" will argue, it's true. We have to carry a piece of paper in our wallets to show we're "legal" with it. The DMV issued us two placards---one for our car and one for the golf-cart.

Thanks, I should have added that. I also forgot that they changed RA to CAP---like the author cited in your tagline, the term must have come from the 10th edition of the Newspeak Dictionary as published by the Ministry of Truth, circa 1984

We have used the photocopy of the car permit on the golf cart, we copy in black and white, front and back so all of the permit number are recorded. My hope is no one would steal the black and white photo copy.

What exactly does a CAP card entitle you do? I'm not a golfer.

It permits one to leave the cart path and drive on the grass and up to 30 feet away from the greens on executive courses as well as approach the greens on champs. They used to hand them out like snow in winter, but now you must meet the same criteria as a handicapped parking permit.

Here's the thing: golf carts can't be registered. Handicap tags issued by the motor vehicle department are supposed to be used on registered vehicles. An LSV can be registered, so if your golf cart is street legal, then you can use the tag on it and park there. I don't know of anyone who actually honors this law, and I don't know of anyone issued a citation for violating it.

Possibly, if someone had a handicap tag hanging from their unregistered non-street legal golf cart, and was parked in a handicap parking space, and they got into an accident while in the parking space, they'd probably be issued a citation for parking where they weren't supposed to be, and the insurance companies would consider them at fault for the accident. That's a stretch, but I'm sure it's possible.

Played a round of golf with my brother who is handicapped a few months ago. The starter said they no longer give out the handicap flags for the executive courses. It's basically the honor system.

OrangeBlossom....you CAN and MUST register a golf cart...IF it is street legal. You get a license plate just like a car and must follow all the rules of the road. You can also get a handicapped tag.
