Default A Good Salad Bar and/or more healthy choices

I really miss a restaurant with a good salad bar (especially one that you can get to go). Ruby Tuesdays is the only restaurant that I know of still open and they have never had a large choice of really fresh good lettuce. Sweet Tomato is greatly missed.

I find myself wondering if I am one of the few in TV that likes to pick up a large salad with a protein to bring home on occasion. We are being blessed with a new KFC, and we now have a new Wendy's (oh joy). One of our new chain restaurants told my husband that he could order a hamburger without a bun or a house salad for a gluten free option (really???)

I have fond memories of Mod Pizza before moving here. For those who haven't eaten at a Mod Pizza, not only can you put a large choice of toppings on a regular or gluten free pizza, but they have 3 sizes of salads with 3 types of lettuce and again, many choices of toppings (vegetables and meats). They have finally come to Florida but driving to Jacksonville or Parkland for a to go salad might be a little much. We lived somewhere that we had multiple choices where there were really good salads I could pick up on my way home.

I can only hope that we will get more health conscious restaurants.

I Totally agree. Love healthy restaurants and we don't have any. I do the kale salad at First watch but otherwise not anything I really can say is fabulous!!

Are you saying KFC isn't healthy?

This is why I eat at home so much, eating out is seldomly healthy.

Publix sells a variety of "pick up and go" salads that are pretty good. I like the one with grilled chicken over field greens and romaine with sliced strawberries, blue cheese, and I believe they also add candied pecans. Served with a blue cheese vinaigrette.

You can also do what I usually do every week: get a pre-washed package of salad greens of your choice, a package or small tub of shredded or crumbled cheese, and a couple other veggies that you enjoy. I like cherry tomatoes and sunflower seeds.

Grab a handful of salad, toss in a couple spoonsful of cheese, dump a few veggies and seeds on top of the bowl and squirt your favorite dressing on top. I often make my own tahini, and add calamata olives and use feta for my cheese of choice.

The cost to make your own salad is infinitely lower than the cost of buying it. And you don't have to go anywhere to make it, it's all sitting right in your fridge.

I do love going out to a good salad bar every once in a while, but if there isn't one available, and even if there is , most often I do pretty much the same as you do, only I buy a 3 pack bag of romaine hearts (they last a lot longer in the fridge than the prewashed bagged lettuce), wash it really well and spin it dry then tear it up or cut it with a silicone knife (never use metal knives to cut up lettuce or it will brown), then store it in a lock n lock container in the fridge, you will be amazed at how long that lettuce stays fresh if it is prepped like that! I also buy some roma tomatoes, a couple of hothouse cucumbers and a bag of already grilled frozen chicken strips at Aldi, some cans of kidney beans, garbanzo beans and beets, various nuts, seeds, croutons and dressings along w/ a couple of kinds of cheeses (Aldi has an amazing assortment of cheeses at great prices and they are much less expensive than other markets on things like nuts also)...

I make the most amazing salads at home that are often way better than anything I could order off a restaurant menu...and another thing I discovered, the left over beets/beans actually freeze well so if you don't want to use them right away instead of having a science experiment smelling up your fridge, just toss them in a freezer bag and take them out about an hour before you need them the next time and they will still be fresh and nicely chilled for your salad and you didn't have to waste half a can of beans.

I love having everything prepped and ready to go so I can toss together a great salad for dinner or lunch in about 5 minutes flat.
