Purchasing a golf cart from a private party. New adventure. Is there a title with a golf cart that needs to be transferred? If so, where is this done? Do you have to pay sales tax? What paperwork should be completed? I know it needs to be insured.... taken care of.

Just get an invoice from the seller with the cart details if not street legal. Should have a title & vin # if it is street legal, then you need to transfer title and get your own plate.

Yes, there is a title, and no it does not need to be transferred. If a seller doesn’t have a title I would get a bill of sale with all the cart info (serial number, vin number) along with the selllers ID.

Since it "doesn't need to be transferred" it's not a title in the sense of a title on a car or motorcycle from the State of Florida. If it is a LSV aka street legal it will have a State of FL official title & plates that does need to be transferred by FLDMV. Nothing is "required" to buy or sell a used golf cart or a used ironing board privately for that matter but a receipt is always good not that it will do anything for you since it's an as-is sale. Just make sure you have it checked out first.

Also if it's street legal and needs to be registered you need insurance. Insurance is recommended but not necessary on LSV's. (non street legal)

The originating dealer for a new cart should furnish the original purchaser with a "Certificate Of Origin For A Vehicle" which lists several things including, dealer name, date sold to the dealer, model number and vehicle I.D. number. While it is not a title, a seller claiming to be "original owner" can furnish it to you along with a copy of the retail invoice proving that he/she is probably its original and rightful owner.

Florida native here... as a 50 plus year FL native... here's the deal. You can sell six cars, real street cars, a year here with no dealer license or tax to the seller but it's more complicated to buy or sell a horse. Yes, I said a horse... LOL That being said... You can buy or sell a golf cart easier than buying at McDonald's and there's really no "title" as there's no true VIN on the vehicle... Just a date of manufacture and origin.. as for insurance, you may as well insure the rocks in front of your house if you expect a settlement after a LSV claim in FL
In Essence: Over the 18 years of being here... I've sold 12 or 13 carts, never a problem Cash, keys, and go... enjoy the day - Steve Last edited by sjd7767; 12-03-2020 at 07:24 AM. Reason: spelling |

No title just make sure you have a bill of sale and address of seller and signed by the seller with the cart VIN number and date of purchase on it. If stolen the vin is the only sure way identify it.

We purchased a 1 year old Yamaha from private seller . They signed over title and provided it to us. Our cart was still under warranty so I had to take it to a certified Yamaha dealer ( village carts) paid $60 for them to check out the cart and transfer the warranty.

Golf cartsfon't have a title. We typed up a small sales contract/statement, with the vin, name, address, dste and sales price, and had the owner sign it.
