You don't see it. It is about the size of a quarter and is glued to the back of the mirror inside the mirror frame/casing.

Here is mine inside the mirror on a Honda 2020 CRV. Even though it has adhesive, I use gorilla mounting tape. Card/coin needs to be mounted in a vertical ( not horizontal) position facing the transmitter/receiver.

Again, I am using "YARONGTECH 125khz rewritable T5577 Sticker Coin Adhesive Back Dia 25mm Thickness 1mm (5)" found on Amazon -> Amazon.com

No pictures because you can't see it. It'd inside the mirrow. You can stick it to the outside bottom of the mirror and cover it with black duct tape. Many have done that. Not as pretty and can come off but actually works better.

Those don't stay too well (or too long) because they are solid (like a quarter) and may not fit because they are thick and not flexible. Best way is an actual sticker.

Just curious about the need for these extra chips people want to install on mirrors and such. Are the ones provided with your home when you move here weaker or of poor quality? We've been here 8 years going on 9 and I've never had to bring the driver's window down to get our cards to work rain or shine.

There is as much "actual need" as there is for a 6000sq ft $1,000,000 home or a $90,000 new car or moving every 6 months because their floors get dirty. Some people just like it for the convenience (real or otherwise) or simply because it's available, convenient and a small luxury and they can have one for a few bucks. That being said, in my car the card does not work through the window at ANY gate and I like the "luxury" of not having to open the window. Makes me feel "privileged." Well worth the cost. I don't smoke or drink, I live in a 1200 sq ft 2/2 and drive a Kia so the 10's of thousands of dollars I have "saved" over my lifetime allows me to be extravagant with a $20-$50 gimmick.

Not referring to you but it is sad that there are SO MANY people around here who judge others for what they spend their money on in this and other topics because THEY feel it isn't necessary yet spend THEIR MONEY on other totally unnecessary stuff. What is the saying about "judging others" or maybe it's about "glass houses" ?

Default Gate Opener on Mirror

It is great. No more getting wet from rain. Nice when it is cold. Slows you down when passing thru the gate thus no breaking bars accidently.

Mine cost $20 installed. Not worth buying the reader/writer and the chips just to do my own. Sure, it's real easy but it was even better when the guy comes to your home and rides around with you to several gates to make sure it's placed in the optimum spot.
I like it because it lowers the wear and tear on the window motor. Get it or don't get it, but why waste your time criticizing the idea if you are not interested in trying it?
Mine fits inside the mirror housing and is mostly hidden by the mirror. What is showing, I covered with a piece of black tape that blends with the color of the mirror housing. My wife didn't even notice it.
I've seen people waving their cards around like a panicked chicken flapping it's wings, folks dropping their cards on the ground and even one that dropped his card down inside the door. I drive slowly up to the sensor and watch for the green light. I usually don't even have to come to a complete stop. There is only one gate so far that it does not work at.

Thanks. I had hoped no one would think I was judging anyone for purchasing anything but that has been the trend on TOTV. Ask an honest question or be curious and get reamed for doing so.

The specs on HID cards is that work from 3" - 8". Aiming down doesn't help much. MOST cars have plastic cased side mirrors and it will pass the signal but if there are a lot of electronics in the side mirror (sensors, turn signals etc) it probably won't. I know a new Toyota RAV 4 wouldn't pass anything through. That may apply to other Toyotas with the same stuff in the mirror.

HID PROX card range is measured in INCHES because you obviously don't want doors or gates opening all around you when you walk by and you can be sure The Villages antiquated system is at the bottom of the sensitivity list. I see about 6-8" as "consistently workable". Anything more YMMV. I've tried (and torn apart) about 8 different types of media. Bottom (obvious) line is the SMALLER the media the smaller the antenna and thus smaller the consistent range.

Typical Maximum* Read Range
ProxPoint® Plus reader-up to 2.5" (6.25 cm)
MiniProx® reader-up to 5" (12.5 cm)
ThinLine II® reader-up to 5" (12.5 cm)
ProxPro® reader-up to 7" (17.5 cm)
ProxPro® II reader-up to 8" (20 cm)
Prox80™-up to 5" (12.7 cm)
MaxiProx® reader-up to 20" (50 cm)

*Dependent on local installation conditions.

This is the "key fob" and "sticky disk" specs which sometimes gets used in the mirrors:
Typical Maximum* Read Range

ProxPoint® Plus reader-up to 1.5" (3.7 cm)
MiniProx™ reader-up to 2" (5 cm)
ThinLine II® reader-up to 2" (5 cm)
ProxPro® reader-up to 3" (7.5 cm)
ProxPro®III reader-up to 4" (10.2 cm)
Prox80™ up to 2" (5.1 cm)
MaxiProx® reader-up to 12" (28 cm)

*Dependent on local installation conditions.

Some antenna size comparisons (The Villages uses many different branded cards this is just one of many). For comparison the round 3M sticker type from Amazon is about the size of a quarter The antenna diameter is about the size of a dime. Wasn't able to open the "key fob" type but it's tiny (and thick).

Also, some of "THE VILLAGES" cards have smaller round antenna (like the custom sticker in the photo) in the middle and not the one all around the edges. Some people cut up those cards to just use the "meat and potatoes" to stick them in the mirror.

I have two. one in each car. They work but you need to make sure your mirror will be close to the monitoring device. Cart mirrors are usually too high, same with motorcycle or bike. Works fine in my two cars and dirt cheap
