If the scooter is 49cc's or less u do not need a license. If it is 50cc's or more a license is required.

You only need a regular drivers's license for under 50 cc and the scooter/moped must be licensed. Most states require liability insurance too. Progressive sell a basic policy for about $65 for clean record drivers.
Buzzing around on a $2,000 Honda or Yamaha scooter sure makes more sense than beating up a $10,000 golf cart. Faster too. I've put 11,000 miles on mine, and I'm only here part time.
Don't let her even consider an off brand scooter from China. They are good for maybe 600 miles, then so sorry: no parts, no fixing. Pure junk!

I have been looking at the new 2013 Honda Metropolitan, gets 115 mpg, top speed around 40 mph, automatic , so no shifting and storage under the seat. Price in Florida about $1,999. new.

The short answer is yes and no. Let me explain!
Florida Motor Vehicle law states that you do not need a drivers license to operate a scooter 49 cc's or less. However, you need a drivers license with a motorcycle endorsement to operate a motorcycle. A motorcycle is defined as any two wheeled vehicle powered by a motor larger than 49 cc's. therefore, If your wife purchases a scooter that is 49 cc's, she does not need a license. Hope this helps.

My kids make me wear a helment so they can have an open casket,,,,,over 10,000 mile on my Honda ruckus it is the hummer of scooters,,, very comfy to ride. Fun and great parking spots,,, I ride most of the time on multi trails,,, justbe safe an watch ur speed on the trails

If 50 cc or less, these vehicles are not motorcycles by driver license law definition, S. 322.01(25), F.S., so a motorcycle endorsement is not required per S. 322.03(4), F.S.; however, to operate them on streets and roadways, you must be at least 16 years old and hold at least a regular operator (Class E) or “Motorcycle Only” driver license. (Reason: Even though these vehicles are 50 cc or less, they still fall under the driver license law definition of “Motor Vehicle” and a driver license is required to operate a “motor vehicle.”) SS.322.03(1), 322.01(26) and 322.05(1), F.S.

We both have scooters and have had various sizes of them here in TV. Find a good dealer first and then purchase a reliable name brand. That basically means Honda, Vespa, and Yamaha. Make sure you can get it serviced and repaired before you buy. We gave up the larger tourning bikes for the easy and efficient scooters when we moved to TV. Easy to park, 100mpg, and easy to ride.

Good advice above, buy Honda, Yamaha, or Vespa. DO NOT buy a Chinese-made scooter.

Real-world example: I ride a Honda scooter. Model year? 1987. Yep, 1987 and it's running like it was new.

And, btw, if you are going to ride on 2 wheels, you should take the Basic Motorcycle Safety Course. What you learn in the course might just save your life.

We are looking to buy a 49cc Scooter to use in the Villages. However when we inquired with the VCDD they stated that it can NOT be used on the Paths in the Villages. Am I to assume that we can use it on the roads? Would rather use the paths and since it is only 49cc it goes about 20 mph like golf cart?

I looked into it --the VCDD rules about the golf cart paths state you can not drive the scooter on it --whish it could be done !!!
