Default Dispose of Old Propane Tank

Does anyone know how to properly dispose of an old propane tank? It is a small 5lb tank. Can you leave at an exchange station? Drop off at a propane dealer? Just throw away with trash? Right now it is setting on the end of the drive hoping a “picker” will come along and take it. It has a couple of years of certification left for it. If anyone would want it, pm me.

Call CSU and ask them about proper disposal, these can be very dangerous if they still have gas in them.

Put a sign on it
"FOR SALE $20.00"
Someone will steal it.

Default propane tank and other hazardous waste disposal

I believe that, unless it is now closed, the site on Rolling Acres Road (on left side beyond the American Legion about 1/2 mile) will take the tanks and other normally non-trash items. I am not in the Villages at this time so perhaps someone can check to be sure the site is open. I believe they have Saturday morning hours.

That site is only for lake county residents.

I have an offer from someone to take the tank. It is now sitting out of the sun. :-) I will eventually have two more if anyone is interested. Another 5lb and a 10lb tank.

They will probably take them at that gas fill business on 441 in Belleview. I traded a small tank for a 20 pounder there once.

Ace Hardware will not fill your tank if it is over a certain age. They told me that my 10 year old one won't be fillable next year.

When I had a tank that had expired, the guy at Ace recommended I go to a tank exchange and just leave the tank there as if I was returning one of theirs. He told me they can recertify the old tank and use it.

I've always gone to a BJ's Warehouse to refill my tank....when the tanks were too old to be refilled they just kept them and I went inside and bought a new one for them to fill

I suspect that if Sam's or Costco refill tanks that they'd do the same thing...that way you know it's being disposed of correctly
