Have you researched any tours in New York? If you are going to see the sights, I would recommend at least a one or two day tour with transportation and guide. If you are going to eat and see a show, Broadway is very walkable and easy to navigate since all the streets are numbered in order. A 20 block walk is very easy since the blocks are short and you walk fast! Lots of other people walking so hold your purse or wallet and go! It's a great place if you stay aware like in any other big city! The Broadway shows are great and pizza is delicious! Lots of good restaurants in the area of Times Square and Broadway. No worse than Rome or any other big city.

Yes, I haven’t heard or seen people being pushed into the Grand Canyon.

It's been a looooong time since I visited NYC and always wanted to go back.

Is it true that NYC is getting very dangerous?

Have you been there recently? How safe did you feel?

Would be interesting to hear from those of you that grew up in NYC...and what your thoughts are on this subject. Also I've always been fascinated by the history of NYC so share stories of growing up there please if you would.

TIA
NYC has 8.5 M people. NYC has almost half the violent crime rate than Orlando. Miami also, the violent crime rate is much higher. There is more violent crime in Florida than New York. There are 20 US cities with higher crime rates in the entire US. Just google the stats for yourself.

Did you read the part where the police don’t collect the statistics? I do believe it is possible to live in NYC and people survive to enjoy the wonderful offerings. I have a friend who does animation, living in the most difficult area for the last 40 years and he would never leave NYC. But, I can get Sak’s designer stuff and great ethnic food in most big cities but Broadway, MET and the other art galleries etc are unmatched anywhere, in my opinion.

I was trying to answer the question is NYC safe? Well, for me, it is not.

There are more pluses to New York City than minuses. Don’t forget the crime statistics for New York City include the outer boroughs, but most tourists do not go to the South Bronx or Bushwick Brooklyn. Most tourists are in Manhattan, which has the theatres, the museums, the endless variety of ethnic restaurants, Wall Street, Madison Avenue, the World Trade Center, the Empire State building and on and on. A lot of what is happening now has happened in the past. I remember, there was a phase of chains snatching I stopped wearing jewelry because they were randomly grabbing the chain from your neck. I remember after 911 there was military in the railroad and the subway checking bags randomly. I remember the military actually got a station at the Long Island railroad. I left New York City not because of crime or crowding, but because of the taxes. If I could snowbird, I would.

I love this post!
So true. Most major cities measure city proper where as NYC and Chicago for that matter count a lot of neighborhoods that stretch many miles from the city center. It's definitely not a fair representation. And I won't even mention LA 'region'...

Our daughter lives and works there and we visit often. Be aware of your surroundings as you should be anytime you travel. She and we have never had a problem. It’s a great city with lots to offer. Enjoy your visit

My son and family live up east and go into NYC frequently and they say it is safe. The media is scaring people. My granddaughter is going to college in NYC and feels safe. Just be cautious of your surroundings.

Was there the first week of December and it was great. Busy, but great. This was only my second time visiting NYC with the first being in the summer. Both times were awesome and I’ll go back every year for as long as I can. As other have stated, be aware of your surroundings but all the craziness you see on TV seems to be exaggerated immensely.

Hmmm. I don’t think so. Notice how many people say, “be cautious of your surroundings”? Why do you need to “be cautious of your soundings” if it’s a safe place?

Question...dont know if you have kids or grandkids....or if your parents did this. But 'be cautious of your surroundings' kind of transcends generations. My kids, all adults, I say the same thing to them. Does that mean I don't live in a safe place? No, one should be vigilant no matter where they travel in course of a day. You had a s**tbag a few weeks ago pummel his 'gf' and attempt to kidnap her....the infamous Mr. Savage...here in TV. Does that mean avoid that neighborhood too? It's all relative, subjective and nobody is immune to it

Muggers fear cameras? I'll be sure to fasten a GoPro to my head next time I walk down a sketchy alley in NYC. Thanks!
