Default Hilton Head Island or Charleston, SC?

Hello! My husband and I along with my sister and brother-in-law are planning a get away together sometime this coming September or October. We are thinking that Hilton Head or Charleston might be fun.

I'd appreciate your feedback if you have vacationed in either town, and if you've been to both which you prefer. We would like to find a hotel, timeshare or **** oceanfront. Any recommendations for accommodations, dining , or must see attractions would be great!

Thank you!

Charleston has better restaurants, more sight seeing, IMHO Hilton Head was great in the early 80's- too congested and not fun to get around, also look up vacation houses--or get a good B&B--its amazing the censorship on this form ****-tried to give you a hint and it printed out ****

We have been to both, several times. It depends on what you like to do. Hilton Head, and just off the island, have a lot of golf opportunities. Hilton Head also has beaches.

If you want golf and beaches and great outlet shopping - HHI is your spot!

If you want to sightsee great architecture and gardens and historical stuff like The Battery and open air markets on cobblestones - Charleston is your spot! A true history buff would want to go and see the Civil War submarine Hunley and its effects under restoration at the old Navy base (I hated it/ hubs loved it lol). There is some big old retired Navy ship (WW II Ithink) berthed across the big bridge at Patriot's Point; and not far from there is the estate that was the site for filming some of Gone With the Wind.

After seeing Charleston it made me forget how beautiful I thought Savannah was!

P.S. If you bookmark The Island Packet, you can read the daily news and about future events for HHI and off-island areas like Bluffton and Beaufort. Should you be there when there is a graduation at nearby Paris Island, you can attend the ceremony since your tax dollars made it possible! It's a truly patriotic and moving experience even if you don't know any graduate! Lots of pomp and military regalia!

We loved Charleston. Lots to do. Loved the Beautiful Old Homes, wonderful Restaurants and lots of shopping. We stayed on Patriot's Point. It's just across the Bridge from Charleston, but a more quiet and relaxing place to go to at the end of the day. Great Restaurants on the water.

You are trying to compare apples to oranges. Hilton Head is a beach and golf resort. Charleston is an historic city for people who like old stuff and history. Both places are good for a getaway vacation. But, in my opinion, Charleston is way overpriced for everything and not as much fun as Hilton Head.

What do you do for fun that isn't beaches, golf and shopping on HHI? We'd be interested in finding more fun there.

Did a week timeshare at Harbour Town, went to Charleston for two nights, and then finished the week back at Harbour Town. Two different experiences, both fun.

We were in Hilton Head last year for a quick weekend and it seemed a bit congested and mostly just condos and hotels. We were there in the early/mid 80's and it was so different then. NOT so built up and it was pretty. I'd say it's more of a golfing destination. Have never been to Charleston but from what I've seen on the travel channel etc., it would be much more fun to explore. I've vote for Charleston!!!

Consider staying at Beaufort South Carolina. A beautiful historic town with outstanding old sea captain homes. Revitalized downtown with horse and carriage rides. Great restaurants seafood galore. Beaufort SC is one of best surprises I have found traveling the east coast corridor. Hilton Head is 35 miles north and Charleston is 70 miles south. Do them all. Hilton Head is more golf and beach. Charleston is historical (civil war) and architecture. If it's architecture you like I would keep going south to Savannah. The prettiest city on the east coast in my opinion.

Why not do both? Hilton Head Island definitely has more activities if you are an active family. Charleston is very nice but more of a place to tour than stay. You can stay on Hilton Head and ride to Charleston for a day or two and throw in lovely Savannah only 30 miles from Hilton Head. PM me and we can discuss further. We have been going to Hilton Head for 30 years and own some rental properties with discounts for Villagers.Hotels can be pricey. if you are interested. I can give you more information if we have a conversation. I can tell you that you picked the right time to go. Schools in SC are back by mid August and it is less crowded but the ocean temperature is still in the 80- 85 range. You will absolutely love Hilton Head Island.

Hilton Head is much improved from the early 80s. June- mid August is most crowded time as it is with any popular beach haven. . Best time to go is Sept October. Ocean water still warm. So much to do if you are active. 60miles of bike trails, walk or bike ride the beach for miles. Visit Harbor Town and South Beach. Rent a kyack, There is a boat out of Harbor Town in Sea Pines that will take you to Historic Savannah. Visit Unspoiled Dafauskie by ferry. Visit Old Towne Bluffton and the Bluffton Oyster Factory. Shelter Cove has many good restaurants and shopping. You and your family will have a great time on beautiful Hilton Head Island.

If you want to find a timeshare to rent ..and there are plenty....in Hilton Head., suggest you go to REDWEEK.com. You do not have to be a member to look at the properties available to rent during the week you desire. September is a great month on Hilton Head (as long as no hurricanes are coming through). If your looking for a specific timeshare recommendation, I would suggest Marriott Grande Ocean resort....all 2 bedroom 2 bath units some ocean front but all a very close walk to the beach/ocean. Very large beach front presence, 5 pools some heated with an indoor pool if bad weather happens your way. They also offer free tennis with group lessons, bike rental, free access ( for owners) to Sea Pines plantation and a very easy bike ride into sea pines Through the Ocean gate. Great bike paths all through the island as well as very nice restaurants both casual as well as up scale.

For a day trip form HHI, Hilton head is an easy drive to Savannah Ga, Dufesekie (sp) Island, Beaufort, Sc, golf and shopping off the island.
