This week, I gave up on Matlock. I thought it would be a good series because it starred Kathy Bates and it was based on the original TV series. But it has been a huge disappointment. Every week, the show gets more and more boring, and I have stopped watching it. Kathy Bates has not been very good in this show at all.

Bad writers…missed opportunity. They should’ve included flashbacks of the daughter so you could see what her story was. Who cares about someone you’ve never met or seen. It’s just a law show at this point and not a very good one. I do like Jason Ritter but he’s not in it too much.

Disagree! We really like it and she has won awards for it recently, so I guess many agree with us. The most recent episode was all about their past history with their addict daughter and how and when they became guardians of their grandson. It was heartbreaking to watch.

“As women get older, we become damn near invisible. It’s useful because nobody sees us coming,” said Kathy Bates in the first episode………..
I love that line because I have found it to be conveniently true sometimes in real life. During Covid I let my hair grow out to its natural color, and if I do say so myself, I love the varying shades of silver and white blended together. Besides, I no longer have to spend a ton of time and money in the “the chair” while a colorist goes through a 3-step process to make a dye- job look “natural.” I often have found my new old look to be useful — and fun. (I have not given up though. I have not gone dowdy, I dress in colors to bring out my hair. My jewelry is mostly silver now. And, yeah, there was that subtle eyelid work a few years ago.) And just to be bitchy, I have to say that someone I know is 3 years younger than me, but her insistence on having her hair dyed very dark is making her look older because it draws more attention to aging skin. Young hair color/aging skin can start to look downright silly after a while. Enough about me and back to Kathy Bates. She is one of my favorites, but I think she needs new writers. I have to wonder if the writers are way young and don’t have a clue that they are late to the game on the opioid plot-line. It’s all been said before and before that. The script is not worthy of Kathy Bates — not even close. I also do not like plot-lines that drag on to overwhelm an entire season. And this one is hobbling the show. Also, older couples can still have plenty of chemistry but she does not get any of that with her husband. It’s all angst all the time. That is another reason I think the writers are young and figuring that’s just how it is for “old” people. In spite of not being impressed with the writing, I will continue to watch because it is Kathy Bates. If it gets another season, she needs to insist on better writers — with some age on them. Boomer (available for consulting) PS: Fun Fact: Annie Potts who played MeeMaw in “Young Sheldon” insisted her character should have gray hair. She was right. Her aging character in that show is written perfectly. Nothing condescending about those writers. Kathy Bates should have lunch with Annie Potts and get some pointers on writers for a character who is an aging woman. Spark up Mattie Matlock.

As others have already noted. It’s the writers not the actors. We watched a couple times and moved on to what we have on our DVR. But to each their own,
