Agree. Why is it important?

I have travelled to Doha many times on business and this is a common question. My colleagues from Qatar advised me to watch the Qatar Airlines commercial and listen to how they pronounce it. That has worked for me over the years - and by the way - Qatar Airways really is one of the Top Two Airlines in my opinion (Other is Singapore).https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7H0efpS7a-c

This is correct. I spent time there, and thats how the locals pronounce it. Kuh-TAR
"Cutter" is just a western bastardization popularized by news readers. |

English speakers also mis-pronounce many Russian/ukranian words. Kiev/Kyiv is still two syllables "key-ev", not fully separate, but definitley NOT "Keeev". Kherson is pronounced "herson", NOT "kurson". The first letter is the Cyrillic "X", which is pronounced more-or-less like the Spanish "X" but was unfortuantely transliterated long ago as English letter "Kh"- the K should be silent. The first a in Nevada is prounounced like the a in apple, NOT ah as many "news" people insist on saying. etc. |

No. That is wrong.
It's Kuh-tar. The same people who mis-pronounce Nevada mispronounce Qatar. |

I actually posted this on FB yesterday:
“Hhmmm moment… I’ve noticed over the last decade that politicians and media will change words, particularly country names, pronunciations. Different than I’d learned them In The previous 50 years… one of the first I noticed, and for some reason grated on my ears, was the pronunciation of Qatar. I learned and internalized it as “kuh-tar”. During President BHO’s administration, it started being pronounced “Cutter”…. I wanted to scream , “that’s not right!”… but, maybe I was wrong… I’m just a poor boy with a Boston public school education… conflict and doubt. Then today, a commercial came on made for the country of Qatar, advertising tourism and soccer. And this commercial, paid for by the country in question, put my mind to rest on this one…. Kuh-tar! (Now on to Kiev (Kee-ev)!“ |

Seems the soccer game on right now with the US taking on Wales is mostly about defense. 0-0 right now.
