The giant Fish Fingers at Tierra del Sol Country Club are the best I’ve had around here. Who knew fish had fingers? Actually lots of the country clubs and fish restaurants have fish and chips, and I’ve never had any that were lousy. However, I’ve NEVER had in The Villages, or the US, for that matter, what I consider REAL fish and chips like I used to buy weekly when I was studying at Oxford. Here the fish pieces are too small, usually too thin, and the batter is wrong. The fish is served with FRIES, not CHIPS (no, I don’t mean what the British call potato crisps and we call chips) Usually the fries are good, and maybe English style chips would be sent back to the kitchen here, but I think it’s hard for American cooks to recreate something they’ve never seen or tasted. Let them spend a day in a good British chip shop and they could do it. But then they have to put a big scoop of chips on a couple pieces of absorbent white paper, put a big plank of fish on top, ask “Salt and vinegar?” then douse everything with lots of both at the same time. Chips arrive with vinegar already on them and soaking in. Never catsup or tarter sauce or anything else. I like tarter sauce just fine with fried fish, but I would never have it with real fish and chips. (Oh, and chances are the best fish and chips will be cooked by people from India or Pakistan, or somewhere similar, if you are in the UK.)

I'm lucky enough to be in the UK right now. Had dinner at the Golden Hind in London. Excellent chippy. Light batter, not greasy, and perfectly cooked Haddock.

Only place that comes close in TV is Havana. A true fillet of Haddock cooked perfectly.

McGrady’s (Scottish pub South of 44 at Sawgrass ) is fantastic. That’s my usual when I visit there.

I love fish and chips! A good cod or haddock dipped in batter and deep fried. Thick slices of potato deep fried with it. Doused in vinegar and tartar sauce on the fish.
No restaurant down here can compare with New England restaurants for fish and chips.
However, the best I've had down here was at Cheers over in Stonecrest. Too bad there isn't a Chelo's down here.

I’m really surprised no one has mentioned Miller’s Ale House. My Polish American husband is an “expert” on fried fish and says theirs is the best he’s tasted in our area. Friends that we’ve recommended Miller’s to have loved their fried fish also. It’s beer battered white fish. Lunch portion is just the right size. Dinner portion is so big you’ll take some home.

Try Bonefish. Pretty good, although I believe it is a beer batter or something similar.

Mallory Hill CC on Fridays has great Haddock and Chips on special and it VERY GOOD! Also Culver’s has REALLY GOOD North Atlantic Cod and Fries, either in a sandwich or a two or three piece dinner. I think the Culver’s on CR 466A is better than the one on CR 466 in Southern Trace Plaza..

Default Seafood reply

First, you don't have to go all the way to Cedar Key for Tony's - there's one in Mt. Dora. Then, if you want real New England seafood, check out Lena's Seafood in Silver Springs.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Wendy's. I like their fries, and they have a good fish sandwich. Does that qualify as fish and chips? And, about half the price of most of these other places.

Little Fin across the square is pretty good, but they don’t have the peas.

The very best I've had in The Villages is at McCrackens Irish Pub in Leesburg. The 2nd best is at O'Shucks in Wildwood. If you happen to find any that you think are better, let me know!
