Default private pay caregiver

My mother might need a person to stay with her at night because she's been falling once in a while.

Does anyone have a recommendation for private pay caregivers?

thanks

Have you considered a medical alert system? It on a necklace and is a button you push if you fall. Here's consumer reports recommendations. They run $40 per month approximately.

Default Caregiver

This is the hardest thing to find. If you don't live close, you might want to call an agency. Google, senior home care or things like that. I needed someone for my mother full time, live-in and it took me a few months and about 35 interviews to find someone. I didn't use an agency. They wanted more money than I wanted to pay. I put an add in the newspaper, put add on craigslist, put something on TOTV. You have to be very careful . A lot of weirdo's out there. I said they had to pass a background check and I still got people with records applying. A few sites to look at if you want are, seniorcarethevillages.com, care.com, sittercity.com. I didn't use these. That Senior Home Companion used to be good. But if you don't have someone that can check up on the people be very careful. Good luck. Hope this helps.

I wrote an extensive article regarding hiring a caregiver for the on line news in The Villages. If you email me at
janeinthevillages@gmail.com I will send it to you. I write a regular column on seniors, I wrote one this past week on the passing of my mom. I will be happy to email you the article as they will not allow links to the on line paper on TOTV.

WE found that these agency franchised services charge about $17-24/hour and while their CNA's are screened and insured by agency, they pay them about $10/hour. The overnight service basically boils down to adult babysitting. You might find someone who does this privately but then you need to do the screening. If you get a medical alert system, make sure you also get a lockbox for storage of front door house key and provide lockbox combination to the security company.

I might be wrong on this but I will post in case someone has seen this. I think I have read about motion sensors that can monitor a home and react to sudden motions that would indicate falling. You could get a call from the system and call your mother. She should keep her cell phone on her at all times. If no answer you can call the sheriffs office for a wellness check. Might want to have a couple of keys at neighbors. You could also use an inside camera system to look into the house, but you might not like that due to privacy. You can also install a lock that you could open over the internet.

I know where I live we could find a couple of neighbors that would agree to be called at any time and would check for problems. Some communities have volunteer groups to help seniors who need extra help. I would call the sheriff's office and the County government to see what suggestions they might have.

Some of these units work at all times even when you are outside or even in the shower. I was looking into it for my mother-in-law.

Thanks, everyone! All suggestions are helpful!

My mom is getting better. She wears her emergency pendant at all times, and it alerts the staff at the front desk if she falls, even if she doesn't push the call button. It's just a struggle right now. It's hard to be in the "sandwich generation".
