Twin Palms Orthopedic in Ocala.
Dr. Farr is excellent.

I have torn rotator cuffs in both shoulders.
Several years ago I made an informed decision to delay the surgery for as long as the conditions do not interfere with my life style. In my mid 80's and have no more pain from the rotator cuffs than I do from the other creaking and cracking aging joints in my body.

Stay as active as possible....exercise/exercise/exercise!!!!!!

To each his own.

Good luck!!

Agree! I had the problem about 20 years ago. DR had 3 options in his recommendation in order 1-exercise 2-cortisone shot(s) 3-surgery. It didn't affect my golf swing so I opted for the exercises. No worse today than it was then unless I try to do things an 81 year old doesn't need to be doing.

I'm confused by your statement a bit. Did you have surgery, or did you use exercise/physical therapy and not have the surgery?

I'm interested because I'm starting PT for rotator cuff injury tomorrow. Dr. Cook, an orthopedic surgeon up at Sharon Morse center, thinks I will need the surgery eventually. My friends' daughter, who has been a sports PT at University of Michigan for 20 years, has read my MRI and thinks I can avoid it. She found me a PT through her network.

I'm torn, so to speak, about what to do but will try the PT first. You're the first person I've heard of who has avoided the surgery, if you did.

I did not have the surgery. I have had a cortisone injection or two over the years. Most of the time I am not even aware I have torn rotator cuffs (both shoulders have complete tears).
If I physically never get any worse than I am currently I will not be having the surgery.

My golf swing is unaffected.....and reasonable (I think for mid 80 age).

As I said previously, I will have an occasional ache or pain but no worse than than any other age related joint pain.

This has worked for me and I do not propose it works for all.

Thanks for input. I have heard Dr Cook was a good one. I have a few bone spurs in there as well and when they go in to clean those up they would possibly fix my torn rotator cuff.....but its 6 weeks just for the fixing of the spurs but 4 months for the cuff repair. I am torn on what to do.

I like Dr. Cook, but he will advocate for surgery. However, when I told him I wanted to try physical therapy first, he readily wrote me a script for it. But he said "You will be back!" He also said not to wait too long lest I need a graft or a frozen shoulder surgery.

My PT friend at University of Michigan sports clinic said "They all say that!" So I am trying PT and lots of exercises in between and hope I attain Billethkid's results.

Good luck to you whatever you choose.

Default Dr Thomas Wright

I know it is a little further away but mine was fully torn and done at Shands in Gainsville by Dr Thomas Wright. I had an AMBIT pump that injected ropivacaine into the area every 33 seconds for 3 days. This resulted in no pain for the duration. After the 3 days, my wife removed the tube and that too was painless. When asked about PT, they gave me what was needed to do it at home and again without pain. Couldn't be happier!
