Default Beer and Kidney Stones?

I have a 2mm kidney stone stuck. It doesn't hurt but there is an ache with it. I went to my doctor and he said drink beer?! He said 3-4 beers would help because beer is a diuretic and it will flush out the kidneys!

IMO, if it doesn't loosen the stone, by my 4th beer, I won't care anyway!

Interesting, I didn't realize this could work.....and as you said, after a couple of beers....lol.

Found this while checking out the medical advice you were given.....

"Researchers in Finland tracked 27,000 men and found that every glass of beer they drank daily reduced their risk of kidney stones by 40 percent. If it’s too late, beer can also help you flush out that kidney stone. Your doc might want to suggest cranberry juice, but beer does the same thing—it dilates your sensitive tubing, so the stone can exit your body as painlessly as possible."

Ironically, the Dr said stay away from cranberry juice as it's acidity promotes stone growth...so does peanuts, peanut butter, chocolate (OH the inhumanity of it all!!), beets and grapes.

when it comes to kidney stones I am a master builder. Essentially you will get all sorts of advice. They all have one common theme flush them out.
The best receipe I have read so far suggest that the person drink a six pack of coke within the first two hours then two hours later 8 pieces of raw asparagus and then 1 gallon of filtered water.

The fact is that if they are too big or irregular in shape you may not pass them. Also relevent is the genius, uric acid or calcium, which determines what foods may be contributing. Making stones is like making cotton candy. so the best method of avoidance is to drink plenty of liquid so these particles have a difficult time coming together. There is also medication that inhibits the stone-making process.

My last attack found three back to back that could not be seen because they were uric acid nor passable so after 8 weeks of false contractions the doc went up after the little rascals (OUCH).

I do take the medication I do drink plenty and plenty of water

I've had 27 of them over the years. My Doc also recommended drinking beer to flush them out. Haven't had a stone since buying in TV...maybe it's because there are so many fun ways to keep hydrated here!

Iced tea has been cited as a culprit in formation of kidney stones:

Iced Tea Can Contribute to Painful Kidney Stones

Aug. 2, 2012 — This is the peak season for drinking iced tea, but a Loyola University Medical Center urologist is warning the popular drink can contribute to painful kidney stones.

Iced tea contains high concentrations of oxalate, one of the key chemicals that lead to the formation of kidney stones, a common disorder of the urinary tract that affects about 10 percent of the population in the United States.
"For people who have a tendency to form the most common type of kidney stones, iced tea is one of the worst things to drink," said Dr. John Milner, assistant professor, Department of Urology, Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.

The most common cause of kidney stones is not drinking enough fluids. And during the summer, people can become dehydrated from sweating. Dehydration, combined with increased iced tea consumption, raises the risk of kidney stones, especially in people already at risk........

Well then. By all my calculations I should never see a stone in my lifetime. Yea!

I had kidney stones every year, sometimes several times a year, for over 15 years. 6-7 years ago I started drinking 2 beers a day and I haven't had any stones since then. Extra beers also help!

I would not recommend treating kidney stones by drinking beer for the following reasons:
1. When we drink any alcohol, including beer, we have an urge to urinate. But because of the properties of alcohol we usually urinate a greater volume than we ingest which leads to dehydration.
2. Beer drinking can also increase oxalate and urate amounts.
So, even though beer is 95% water, you are better off sticking with a drink that is 100% water like........water. Although some beer aficionados will claim that Bud Light also qualifies as 100% water.
