Default Use of slow-release fertilizer on zoysia?

I have a zoysia lawn in a new house and Im trying to do some research on proper care. A couple of sources say to use a slow-release fertilizer on this type of grass (UF site as well as the contractor that the warranty department has sent over). Im thinking that the liquid fertilizer that my lawn care company (Deans) is using has nitrogen that is all water-soluble and is not slow-release. I talked to my Deans rep about using a slow-release granule but he said that they dont use this unless a lawn is really bad off (apparently mine isnt that bad yet), and I didnt pursue it further. Any insights or experience here? Thanks.
