I am doing a project where I want to remove and cap off three sprinkler heads. I am in the Village of Silver Lake. I get one water bill so the water that is coming into the house is the same water that is used to water the lawn. My question is, will shutting off the water coming into the house by closing the valve in the garage turn off the sprinklers as well or is there a separate shut off for them?

We're in Dist 1 and we have a separate shut off for the sprinklers. Didn't know this until we had a leak. It's about 4' from the main shut of in the lawn.

there should be no need to turn off the water...find out the size of your sprinkler head pipe and then go to hardware store or lowes and buy threaded end caps ... unscrew sprinkler head and screw on the caps

If it is a 0-360 degree adjustable sprinkler head, you can just turn it down to 0 degrees. But, it may still leak a little.

you could turn off the water to the house and then turn on the sprinkler system and see what happens.
As mentioned I would look for the 4" green cap. The home should be separate from the sprinkler so you can turn of the water to the home when you are on vacation. |

There are plenty of homes here on the Clampett's side that do not have a separate shut off for the irrigation. This really should be checked the way it was stated above in post 6, you do want separate shut offs. Also no need to turn the water off when capping or changing heads, only when messing with the valves does the water need to be shut off. If you want to be extra sure just turn off the clock.

There should be a separate shutoff for your irrigation system. Most often it is a PVC valve located in or near your zone valve box. Like ureout said though, you really don't need to valve anything off unless the zones will be active while you're working. Just cap the lines when the whole system is off & you shouldn't have any problems.

It’s probably 1/2 pipe with pipe threads. As suggested if you can just turn off the pop up nozzle just do that. If the pops ups are in you’re road? dig down ( usually 4 to 6 inches), remove the pop up, and cap the 1/2 inch male pipe thread off with plastic cap.
Caps Available at Lowe’s, ace, or Home Depot which ever ones closes to you? I’ve blocked off several of mine, didn’t have to turn any water off, just shutoff the irrigation control if you think it may come on when you’re working on it? |

If you have an irrigation system on the garage wall, just shut off the system;you don't have to do that if you working on the sprinklers while they are not running;only flow out of the sprinkler will be runoff of water sitting in the line you are working one;also should have a shut-off valve a irrigation box along one side of the house (where solenoids are located) and within about 1 or 2 feet from this box or maybe inside the box is a shutoff valve. Again, you can work on any sprinkler or irrigation pipes if irrigation isn't running.

You do not have to turn the water off to change the sprinkler heads. Just be sure the timer is not set to turn on when you are doing this very quick and easy job.

No need to shut the water off.
As long as the zone valve is closed no water will flow to the heads. Just shut everything down at the controller. |

If you do that your sewer usage on your bill will be much higher because the irrigation water is not charged as sewer use.
