We have a very small courtyard but want to have a few plants. Do blueberries grow well here? BTW, I do NOT have a green thumb!

I have 3 planted - was told you need at least 2 varieties for greater fruit yield. Mine are not in an ideal spot - they only get full sun for a few hours each day, along the neighbor's house of my side patio in a CYV. Have replaced 2 of them and now need to replace one of those - but they are cheap, around $5. That could be because we planted them last spring and then left for almost 5 mos.
I have blueberries forming on one of them, but that might have been from an early fruit set in Dec. with the warmer than usual winter here. Might need to net them to protect from the mockingbirds, who also peck at my tomatoes once they start ripening. I pick those when they are just starting to turn red and finish ripening inside to outsmart them. My varieties are Emerald and Jewel. Would suggest buying plants from and talking to the guy who sells plants at Marion Market (on the south side of the market - drive almost all the way around. He knows what he's doing - believe he's a Master Gardener. All his plants are very reasonable. He was very enthusiastic about blueberries - I bought mine at Walmart and Lowe's, but will buy my replacement one from him. Probably fall was the best time to plant, but I'm not certain about that. |

There are several you pick farms in the area. One of the farmers south of here sells at the Wildwood Farmers market, when in season.

We purchased three (3) locally grown blueberry plants. Cost about $20 each, included planting and being fertilized correctly for the first time.
They are thriving. Hardest part is deflowering them. The first year you can not let them have berries. Plants will be stronger. Bought them along with our 7 citrus trees and grape vines from a local grower - M & G on 441. His family owns the larger wholesale nurseries in the area and he is quite knowlegeable. Had one tree that is not easy to find - Page orange tree. Lots of luck - and happy picking.

Is he located near the fruit and vegetable aisle? That's how I'm oriented in Marion Market.

I think it's on the same side and an aisle or 2 away (toward the entrance to Marion Market), but can't remember for sure. Just found the guy's card - his name is Richard Toth, phone 352-638-2711. Call him before Thursday and request that he bring blueberry plants. Leave your phone # and I think he will tell you if this is not the right time to plant.
I just saw some neat videos on The Grumpy Gardener website on various plants/shrubs to grow in the South. Growing Blueberries was one of them. Think maybe my problem could have been planting them too deeply. |
