Does anyone know why our outdoor water spicket makes a high pitched winning noise when it is turned on? Better yet, how to stop that noise when the water is on outside (from the spicket not the sprinkler system). Thanks.

They do that at start up and turn off. Also when running low volume of water.

Sound comes from the backflow preventer attached to the spigot. It is there by code to prevent water from outside sources being siphoned into the domestic water system.

We call the noise "Moaning Myrtle"-- a Harry Potter ghost

Take your hose off the valve then take a needle nose pliers and pull out the little spring just inside the opening, your noise will be gone.
