We had a "pressure treated" wood pergola installed almost 3 years ago by a professional company. We have jasmine and Passion flower growing on either end. A few weeks ago we noticed significant wood rot on several pieces. We had the company come look at it and it is their opinion we should have maintained it with paint and wood filler where cracks are appearing and plants growing on top add to the rot. Do you agree pressure treated lumber rots away this quickly? It's not showing any signs of wear where the attachments go into the lumber. Does anyone else with a wood pergola have one that has lasted more than 3 years? How do you maintain yours? Do you have plants growing on top? Thanks for opinions and advise!

The simple answer is yes - you need to take of pressure treated wood. I have built several decks up in NJ with pressure treated wood and you still need to take care of the wood. There is a special weather treated coating to apply to protect the wood.
They should have informed you of this when they put the pergola up. Z

I agree... all wood will rot out but the plants may have accelerated the process.

No.
If you can find a tag, usually stapled to each board, you could contact the mfg. They will replace material (not labor) |
