Default Bermuda grass invasion

Bermuda grass has infiltrated my St. Augustine lawn and is taking over. Deans will not treat it as it is a form of grass. Anyone else ever experienced this problem?

If you have St Augustine Provista it is glyphosate tolerate. While the St Aug is actively growing you can spray half strength glyphosate on the bermuda to kill it. If the St Aug is stressed don't spray and don't spray in the winter when it's not actively growing. Tractor Supply is the only store I know of that sells glyphosate. Roundup no longer contains glyphosate.

I saw somewhere that it will take upwards of a 41% or so strength of the Glyphosate. It’s also available on Amazon.

Not all lawns have the ProVista. Best to spray a small test area. If you’ve had your lawn replaced (whole or in part) it most likely was not replaced with the ProVista. I don’t know why, as a Bermuda Grass invasion is very common. Spraying the Glyphosate is a very good control. Best to get it early as it spreads quickly. It’s also recommended not to do an area more than 3 times per year.

I also read in this forum that the villages once used it (the ProVista) but stopped and is using another varietal of St Augustine.

Lots of information on the internet about it.

Yes, we are getting it too. We mow our own lawn, Ferrigator said it is coming from seeds/roots that were in the yard previously or from the preserve. They had a seen people rip up their entire yard and go as deep as 6 inches replaced with all new sod. And it still came back so I think I’ll look at trying what suggested up above. I didn’t want you to think you were alone.

Here is a link to a “you tuber” who speaks of his success in using two chemicals to eradicate the Bermuda grass in St Augustine.

We will fight in the lawns. We will fight in the shrubbery. But we will never surrender! 🧐

The cheapest and easiest solution is to mow your grass and let the bermuda and St. Augustine decide who wins. Using "selective" poisons stresses your "good" grass, and never live up to the hype. Have watched for decades now as new Floridians try to have "pure" lawns of one type of grass and go through years of turmoil ending with... uglier weeds and no grass in the area they wanted the "other" grass out of.

Bermuda is resilient and DEEP rooted. Round Up mixed a little strong but don't mow the area for a couple weeks so the "greenery" can absorb enough to kill the root. 2 applications a month apart should do the trick. Then re-sod.

Pro Vista was used for the early properties South of 44. TV went back to Floratam after finding ProVista very problematic. If your St Augustine is deep green healthy and growing fast, likely you have Floratam.

I’m experiencing weed problems. If it is green, and is a form of grass, feel free to pull it up and put in on my lawn. Plus, if it’s Bermuda, I can hit golf balls out of it into the wildlife preserve behind the house. I need practice hitting out of the rough.
