We've always enjoyed dogwoods "up north." How about here?

We are in zone 9a down here. I googled this and found:
Red dogwood (Cornus florida var. rubra) is a lovely flowering dogwood tree that produces red blooms in springtime. Its crimson berries are lovely and provide food for wild birds. It thrives in full sun in zone 9.

I had a dogwood tree in my west facing front yard in The Villages. It did very well for years, but a wind storm broke it off about 3 feet above the ground.

It is a beautiful tree but do not remember having berries on it.

Grew very nicely when we lived in Va.

We had two large ones when we lived in New York. They were glorious. When in bloom people would stop their cars to look. They are being attacked by some imported fungus. Both trees died. One I replaced 2 x with claimed fungus resistant varieties. They were expensive and both died. As far as breaking. One of mine broke. The tree was sick for years. I was surprised to see the inside of the tree was hollow.

I doubt dogwoods will grow well here. They need acidic soil, our soil is alkaline. They grow in partial shade.

There are two white dogwoods in partial shade of oak trees on the south walkway of Eisenhower rec center. I would guess due to the oaks the soil is more acidic. There are also camelias there that also require acidic soil. The dogwoods, used to be nicer than they are now.
