Hello all my fellow golfers! We've noticed an increase of ball hawking taking place over the last 30 days or so. We played early a few Sunday's ago, when the walking couple in front of us, ball hawked on every hole! Which caused us to have to wait on every hole to tee off and it also distracted us, when we were on the tee box. All because this couple had to search every bush and body of water along the way to the next hole, for a ball. Ugh. I think ball hawkers should be penalized ( points) by golf ambassors.
Those who are visiting, seasonal or forgetful. Ball hawking is not okay at all. If there is no one immediately behind you and you wanna take an occassional look, please do so. When ball hawking causes delays and distractions, it is not okay! This couple must not be aware of the snakes and gators, that live on Sweetgum, because they wouldn't have been rummaging through the weeds and bushes. Frustrated with ball hawkers. |

Anywhere, and for as long as I have played golf some players just can't resist the power of hawking. I played with a group of attorneys on one course in Minneapolis. This one very successful attorney had the most graceful of swings I had ever witnessed. He was a scratch golfer . Yet at every hole he stopped took out his retriever and hawked balls. it certainly wasn't because he couldn't afford to buy his own
It happens here on a continuum and on all courses Frankly I just look the other way as at this stage of my life it takes every ounce of concentration I can muster to remember what I am doing at the present moment ![]() |

To me, the definition of "hawking" means selling something. Today, after picking a ball with my retriever at the edge of a pond, the "Ambassador" told me that "hawking" was not allowed at The Villages. I thought this strange, since we were not holding up anybody on the course. Then we witnessed this "Ambassador" drive past red-staked areas, looking for balls, and driving along the side of the road, looking for more balls. The only time he stopped was next to the ball washer, to wash his "finds". Yes, please don't slow up play, but there appears to be plenty of "Ambassadors" who think that abandoned balls are only for them. Yes, I did report his activity to the starter shack.

When we asked an Ambassador why he was retrieving balls, he replied " to help golfers avoid temptation." LOL

I'm American and I walk all the time, I sure hope all I see out walking are American also. Everybody should be walking the executive courses anyway (except for the handicapped and Handicapped corvette drivers), Cause you can't drive on the grass Majority of the holes. Walking would probably pick up pace of play. Golf and darts only games I can think of where extra weight not factor in playing ability. Now were not talking about set down games.

The Ambassador needs to enforce the rules. I follow The Village Golf Snob on Facebook. They have BOLD opinions about rule followers.
