We are thinking about getting a dehumidifier for our villa. Do most people have this? We will be gone May through October and wonder if it would aid in mildew, mold, etc. growth.

Any recommendaions as to company or brand?

We used Munn's and had our thermostat replaced with a dehumidistat (Think that is what it is called). Gone from June-October. Savings the first summer more than paid for the expense of installing this product. Unbelievable product. Cost around $325.

In Florida in the summer the air handler (AC) runs so much there is no need for a dehumidifier. The dehumidistat keeps the AC from coming on unless the humidity goes higher than your set point and that is typically 60%. This will save a lot of money if your are not here in the summer.

We bought a new CYV 3.5 years ago and installed a Dehumidistat from Munn's also because we are usually back in CT for the summer months. DEFINATELY a must have if your home will be unoccupied during the summer. We have has no issues with mold and mildew and the savings are the AC unit only comes on when the humidity is over your setting (usually 60%).

Second home and the second humidistat installed by Munns. Set it at 60% and we set our a/c at 78 degrees. When the home humidity gets above 60% the a/c turns on, instead of having the a/c running all the time at a preset degree of cooling.
Warning though if you have a home watch outfit checking your house, it may get very warm inside especially during the hot summer months, but as long as the humidity stays at 60% or lower it is working.

Can't agree more with having the humidistat. We installed one in our second year because the electric bills where outrageous with no one living here during the summer. Yes, it is easy to operate as the "summer" setting can be saved and recalled when you leave. It is also easy to use when the home is occupied. I frequently change between air conditioning and not when there is changes in the temp. As we have had recently. If you are at all handy, buy it on line and save $150 to 200 by doing it yourself.

Also had a dehumidistat installed by Munn's; we are snow birds from Wis. & have it set @60 & 85 as they recommended. My electric bill runs $22.00-$28.00 for the summer mo. for a 1480 sq. ft. cottage. Definitely saves $$$.
