Does anyone have information or a site on the cost of electricity durning a 24 hour peroid.
I tried the Seco site but no luck. Our National Greed or I mean Grid in Syracuse does not give you a break for night rates. I was wondering if Seco in 32162 Area Code does? Yes a Plug in Prius is in the works. Thanks |

Sorry, never heard of night rates for electricity. Why would there be such a thing?

Night rates are designed to smooth the peak demand for power. A power plant must have the capacity to meet the projected (or actual) demand. Large factories do not turn on all of their machinery at one time!

Herv, I don't believe SECO has a provision for off-peak rates.
From our most recent SECO bill: Customer charge $14.50/mo. Energy charge $0.104150/kwh Power cost adjustment $.008300/kwh State tax 7% (charged on the $5.95/mo. lease on our service meter surge protector) Gross receipts tax 2.5625% (charged on the total of the customer chg, energy chg, and power cost adjustment monthly totals) But here is a good piece of news - SECO is instituting a decrease in their rate: Sumter Electric Cooperative will cut utility costs to its nearly 180,000 customers beginning in July | Ocala.com Bill ![]() |

New I could count on you Bill- And sorry I missed you last week. We were close but so so far away.
For other folks if you have a EV vehicle, cart or appliance smart washer or dishwasher or water heater etc you can program the device from a smart phone or from the appliance itself to only charge or operate at the utility lower night rate versus peak power demand and highest rate at day. For instance a Nissan leaf or Chevy Volt could be accessed at your parking garage while you were at work. You could check the charge and mileage available. It would ask you do I charge now or do you want me to wait later. Another example would be if available in TV your car could be hooked to a charge point, Before you go home from work you use you smart phone to turn on the cars AC to cool it down( or heat it up) and then the car would ask how far are we going to travel? I have x amount of mileage charge remaining. Would you like me to top off my charge now take a small charge or wait for me to get home to my garage. Never thought in 1978 in Automotive College while learning how to set ignition points dwell and rebuild a carb that one day I would be communicating with a car and programing it with a cell phone. |

A bit of a left turn on the thread but I heard SECO offers a surge protection at the box but it doesn't actually cover the computer, etc. Anyone think the surge protection is worth it? How about the computer issues?

We have more lightning strikes in this area of Florida than in any other part of U.S. Seven homes in The Villages have burnt to the ground in the last eight years from direct lightning strikes. They have all been homes with gas lines.

Actually, the price of their surge protector at the meter is $349 plus tax to purchase it outright - includes installation. Surprised me too - higher than I thought!! We've took the lease option with ours. Just kept the one in place that the prior homeowners were leasing - no installation charge in that particular instance. Bill ![]() |
