We just bought a house and need 1000 feet of tile removed- also there is carpet between the tiled area and we want to install floating vinyl tile- any body know an inexpensive way of getting this done?? Had no idea when we bought the house what a problem this is!!

Put vinyl plank over the ceramic tile floor. No problems

The correct way is to remove it, not cover it up. DIY is the affordable option. You can either get a pry tool under each tile and pop them up. This usually works. You may have to use an electric demolition hammer. It is a cross between a drill and a handheld jack hammer. A Chinese version is fine for what you need. Amazon sells them for 129.00. for some reason the harbor freight version is well over 200.00 now.

I have removed well over 1500 sq ft. It is an unpleasant task. It is loud and dusty. I used the demolition hammer.

OP, if you go with putting the vinyl OVER the tile there are two things you must consider. first there will be a height difference wherever you had rugs. Second, (and I have personal experience here from a project up north), you may not be able to remove the dishwasher with the additional clearance (the height) of the vinyl flooring. If you have laminate counter tops, you might be able to break the glue and get the top high enough, of you have stone, forget it.
Bottom line, I completely agree with removing the whole floor, this is a relatively dusty and dirty job. You might do this in 2 steps, remove the carpet, and install vinyl in those rooms, live in the house for a while and see if you still need to remove the tile.

If you do this DYI, you had better hope that the installer of the tile did a marginal installation job. If he used a good quality thin set mortar with the correct sized notched trowel, and back buttered each tile, you will have a very hard time getting the tiles loose. You will definitely need mechanical help, which means lots of noise, dust and debris.

One more word of caution, our house had the entire tile floor installed and then the cabinets were installed. This means that you will need to be extra careful around the cabinets. IMHO, you will need to remove the small trim molding, and then use a diamond blade to score the tile and suitable chisel to break the tile along the score line. Sounds like an interesting project.
