Default Need Garage Door Opener Recommendation

One of the springs on our original MVP garage door opener broke. Rather than replacing the spring, we want to have a new garage door opener installed for our 2 car garage door.

We are looking for recommendations for a quiet door opener. I'm not sure what these new "smart" openers do but I don't think the smart features are a necessity. Just looking for a really quiet reliable garage door opener.

Upon doing some research, I see there are three different types of drives available.....
chain drive, screw drive and belt drive. I'm aware the chain drive is the loudest so we will eliminate that one. Of the two drives left, which drive do you recommend, screw drive or belt drive?

Many thanks in advance for your recommendations.

EDIT: After reading some old threads about garage door openers, I see Ryan O'Cull is highly recommended for the installation. We will most likely call him to do the installation.

I think the Chamberlain brand is the best and quiet too.

I also recommend Ryan O'Cull to install it.

Definitely get a belt drive. Our old genie opener sounded like the portcullis at the Tower of London was opening.

Now it's just a whisper.

I installed the Chamberlain 3/4 smart wifi opener. It took me about 90 minutes to do it.

The nice thing about it is I can open the door remotely. I have someone coming to pick up my cart this week and I'm not going to be there. He'll call, I'll open the door and he can get it. No fuss, no muss. I also have a camera in there, so I can watch .

Another vote for Chamberlain. Make sure you get one that has the auto-close after 10 minutes feature (with an override button). About $200 from HomeDepot.

Also, to reduce noise significantly, lube the rollers, hinges and generously lube the springs with white lithium spray grease, about $5.00 at the hardware store. For lubricating instuctions, see YouTube.

Recently replaced my opener(with a Chamberlain) and lubed it. Went from noisy to stealth.

You still need to replace BOTH springs, why? Because they do most of the work opening your door (they are heavy). Why both? Because if one broke the other is not far behind and they do have to equal.

Belt drive is the most quiet but you still need to replace that broken spring , the springs do the actual opening and closing .

The opener is not part of the garage door, it is an accessory. You need to replace the spring wether you get a new opener or not. Then get a Chamberlain brand if you still want to replace the opener.

It’s also nice if you drive away and you’re not sure if you shut your garage door you can check your phone and if it’s still open shut it from the phone. Well well worth 30 bucks extra. Just our two cents.

On top of those things, which are great, you can trigger the door when you are well outside of remote range. We're on the cart, in the rain, one of us will open the door when we are on approach. When we arrive, we drive the cart straight in without waiting since the door is up. Sure it's only a few seconds, but it's a LONG few seconds when Niagara falls is over your head. Twice in July this helped us during a pop-up deluge.

Call Ryan O'Cull (352) 617 - 0522. Very honest, dependable, knowledgeable, and reasonably priced. He has done work for many neighbors and friends. He is extremely responsive. He will probably answer his phone; or, leave a message and he will return your call pretty quickly. BTW-- he was the one who told us that ROMAC installed incorrect springs on our garage door. ROMAC came out and replaced the incorrect springs at no charge.

U will need two new springs plus your new opener. Again, the springs do the work. Ryan O will do the best job for you.

I recommend replacing the garage door opener with a door opener that has changing codes for more security. The simple door openers without changing codes can have the opening code copied by a criminal if they are physically near your garage at the time when you open or close your garage.

There is another simple modification you can make to your garage door to increase your security. One way criminals break into your home is to put a coat hanger in the top of the garage door where there is a smaller opening for a coat hanger to slip in. They grab the emergency garage door opening string, and release the door opener lock. Criminals can open a locked overhead garage door in 30 to 60 seconds. Once the criminal is in the garage, they walk through an unlocked door into the house. Many people never lock the door from the garage to the house. Or, the criminal could break through the door to the house, undetected from outside the house, after they close the overhead door. There are YouTube videos that demonstrate how criminals can exploit this security vulnerability.

You can easily make your garage door immune to this security vulnerabilty by removing the emergency release cord and tie wrapping the release mechanism. If you ever need to release the emergency lock in the future, you simply cut the tie wrap. Everyone can increase their overhead door security, but very few people make the modification.
