Has anyone ever converted their electric stove to gas? If so, what are the requirements in terms of approvals, permits etc. and what is an estimated cost for this project. Any insights would be appreciated.

While I have not done this personally, 2 neighbors have had propane installed. I believe the tanks are 250 gallon, and are buried, typically in the front yard near the driveway, and the gas line is buried back to the house. In both of these cases, the gas was to an outside kitchen, if you are going to the normal kitchen stove and it is not on an outside wall you will need to have the gas piping routed through the attic. I do not know if ARC approval is required, but I would call to be sure. All of the permits need to be pulled by the licensed contractor doing the work. IMHO I would leave the wiring and receptacle in place for future conversion back to electric (check if this is legal).

Depending where you live there is gas in the street. TECO will connect to the house if you have 2 gas appliances. You need to be North of 466A.

Another option to consider would be an Induction Range. They are still electric, but respond with near the speed of gas. They heat the pan, and not the room.
Be warned: Induction requires good magnetic pans (translation $$$) but it is still worth exploring. |

Wow! I'm sure this can be done, but it will almost surely need a permit, and it will be expensive, depending on how much gas piping is needed, and the cost for a new stove. I just cannot imagine this project being worth the time, effort, and cost.

We live 1 mile south of 466. I called ARC and gave them my address. They said I have gas running to the house and that I could go ahead and replace the electric stove with gas and the only requirement is that the stove be installed by a licensed plumber or electrician (I don't remember which they said) since we did not yet go ahead with the conversion.

Good point -- I should call the Gas Company and have the discussion. But since we don't eat out nearly as much as we thought we would due to the fact that we are located in the middle of a fast-food Mecca, we are cooking most of our meals. After over 50 years cooking on gas, DH and I are still having problems adjusting to electric. So I'm at a point where I almost don't care what it will cost. (Of course I sald almost LOL) . I really do need to make that call. Thanks for your comments.

Here is the scoop. We had this done with in the last 6 months. Our tank is 250 gal. The bill was about $2200 including the $60 permit which the contractor got. There are inspections of course which the contractor set up. We bought a Samsung gas range top for $1200 on line. (the complete oven and stove was only $600) because we did not want to lose the storage drawers. Propane is $2.50 per gal from T & D . Very Pleased. Also had the summer kitchen hooked up which was an extra $325

If we already have gas to the house used for the water heater, dryer, furnace and pool heater does that mean there is likely gas already piped to the stove, just needs to be hooked up to a new stove? We are between 466 and 466A.

Pull out the stove a few inches and see if there is a steel, other metal, or plastic pipe sticking out of the wall, or it may be inside one of the base cabinets on either side of the stove. If you have a sheet vinyl floor, make sure you protect it when pulling out the stove. Most likely, the builder did run a gas pipe to the stove location.
