There is a strong smell, like sulphur, outside. As soon as I turned onto Pinellas, I smelled it, and if I go into my garage now, I can still smell it. Any ideas?
Not here in Caroline, but I do remember smelling a sulfur like smell one time when playing the Truman golf course. We aren't on a sleeping volcano, are we??. :D
Not sure what it is or where it's from.

We were coming back from Turtle Mound tonight about 7:30 and noticed a smell on Pinellas. I said to my husband " I'm glad it doesn't smell like that at our house. Low and behold when we got home I went out on the lanai and it smelled just like the other smell!! I got a laugh out of it. Don't know what it is though.

Its all due to the increase of gas guzzling golf carts. You can see the haze of carbon above your head. it is also because of the sewer plants converting dirty water so the viilages can water courses' It is also because of the high humidity and warm tems along with all that rain. its also because of all the fertilization being done here to keep everything lush and green. The Villages is creating a huge carbon footprint and that is the real reason for the IRS bond dispute.:D

So there is the same type of sulphur smelling water used by the underground sprinklers....such as is used on the east coast of Florida?????
When we were staying in TV, we were HAPPY that the sprinkler water had no odor. The sulphur smell on the east coast was nauseating....but that's what they sprinkled the lawns with. It was Saint Augustine grass.

North of 466 the sprinklers use plain water like from the tap.
South of 466 the lawn sprinklers use water from the ponds.
South of 466 when the sprinklers first come on it is stinky. The water has been sitting there and fermenting in the heat, after a minute or two it isn't so bad.
I don't think the odor is from sprinklers. I wonder what it is.

Come to think of it, when we did our 4 day lifestyle visit at Creekside Landing there was a sign by the home that said something about "reclaimed water".
Creekside Landing is near Lake Sumter Landing.
So, "reclaimed water" has a sulphur like odor???

BECAUSE Calumet Grove is NORTH of 466 where they use tap water like from inside the house.
Reclaimed water from ponds is used SOUTH of 466. It can be stinky especially in high temperatures.

No, it's from the steel mills. Whoops... wrong city, wrong decade.:pepper2:
I don't know about steel mills, but wood pulp paper mills have a terrible odor. Whenever we'd pass inland through the town of Rumford Maine which has the cutest waterfalls........it often had that odor......from the mill....but that mill provided the livelihood for the town.....the row houses were still there, that housed the workers back in the day.....
In the early 1900s two mills that are still in operation today were built on opposite ends of the state. Hugh J. Chisholm opened the Oxford Paper Companys Rumford mill, now owned by NewPage, in 1901. In 1906 St. Croix Paper opened the Baileyville (Woodland) mill, now owned by Woodland Pulp LLC.
************************************************** *******
Amelia Island Florida used to have the same type operation and residents complained of the odor from the paper mill..........a neighbor friend of ours who just happens to be a retired anesthesiologist bought a home on Amelia Island.........but later sold it. So, for now, the doctor and his wife are staying put in Vermont. The particles used to fly through the air and land on the cars.....
We also used to pass some big huge paper mill while driving south to Florida, perhaps in Georgia? Not sure.....but the smokestacks would let out a terrible odor.
So, between sulphur smell and wood pulp and steel mills....don't know which is the worst. I guess anything could be worse than an occasional odor of sulphur............as long as it is not methane gas. If that smell is inside the house, then it would be worrisome.............people do experience that during HEAVY RAINS........and in some flooding situations.
It would come up from the toilet........

It could be the reused water they use to water common areas.
Very likely what it is.......the reused water.
In our town, if there was a pervasive odor, we would call our Town Clerk or call someone in the Water Department......doesn't TV have a higher up that they can call???? Everyone up here knows who works in the Town Hall and in the Water Department. Obviously, we do not have underground lawn sprinklers.......but just saying.......if there was a smell and it was perceived to be the water.......then we'd call. Or else, call the appropriate town office.
Who do you folks call when there is a problem????? Just wondering.
A short time ago, we discovered that the Blue Rhino plant which exploded wasn't that far from The Villages. Maybe there is other industry around the perimeter????? What other factories might there be???? Maybe they are emitting this foul odor.
Like up here...........if someone ran over a skunk or a skunk passed through someone's back yard..........the stench would last and last and be very annoying..........so I can understand why people are asking questions about this sulphur odor. Is it coming from the water treatment plant itself???? Maybe they have a problem. It is a nauseating smell.....no one likes to smell sulphur in the air.
Good luck with clearing it up........or at least getting answers.
Anyone raised in a city can remember the chemical smells every now and then (when we were kids) but it's something you get used to.
However, a pervasive odor in the air doesn't bode well for someone in TV trying to sell their home right now.........most people like to breathe fresh clean air.

Fish kill in some of the ponds due to temperature inversion from all of the rain
I just found this:
A sudden appearance of dead fish in a lake or pond causes considerable concern and alarm for most people. Our first reaction is to suspect poisoning of the waterbody. Most fishkills, however, result from natural events, although people can influence their frequency and severity.
Fish kills usually result from too little oxygen in the water.
South Florida receives between 150 and 200 fish kill reports each year.
While some result from spills or illegal discharges of toxic substances, most kills occur when OXYGEN dissolved in the water drops to levels insufficient for fish survival.
For a dissolved oxygen of DO-related fish kill to occur, a combination of environmental conditions transpire simultaneously.
WEATHER PATTERNS, water temperature, depth and quality, amount and type of plant growth, fish community structure, along with the presence of viruses and bacteria are all factors that are necessary to trigger a fish kill.
Lakes, ponds and canals located in RESIDENTIAL AREAS are particularly vulnerable to DO related fish kills. Developed areas create runoff that contain high amounts of nutrients from SEPTIC TANKS.
In addition, street and yard drainage that enters waterbodies can cause water quality problems...
High levels of nutrients from fertilizers applied to lawns, golf courses and farms cause aquatic plants to thrive......
Ponds with high nutrient levels produce dense growths of microscopic plants called ALGAE.
When sunlight is available, algae use nutrients and produces oxygen through the process of photosynthesis. Most oxygen available to fish comes from algae.
DURING NIGHT TIME and cloudy weather, low sunlight causes algae to switch from photosynthesis to respiration, consuming oxygen needed by fish. During severe events, fish can suffocate from low DO.
Most frequently, fish become stressed during a low DO period and become susceptible to viral or bacterial infections.
Most fish kills occur in the warmer months of May through September.
Usually after a period of RAINY or cloudy weather.
Application of pesticides to control lawn and crop insects can enter a pond during heavy rains and cause a fish kill.
FISH KILLS CAN ONLY BE PREVENTED BY MAINTAINING GOOD WATER QUALITY.
CLEAN UP OF FISH KILLS OCCURING IN PRIVATE RESIDENTIAL LAKES AND CANALS ARE GENERALLY THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PROPERTY OWNER OR HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION.

Nope, what you and I remember was a wood pulp paper odor; actually it wasn't there every single time.....it depended on how the wind was blowing.
Some in TV have mentioned an odor of "sulphur".....which reminds me of the sulphur water they use on the east coast of Florida in the water sprinkler systems (underground sprinkler system) for residential homes.

The odor was so bad last week that while playing golf, I has to hold a towel over my face. The guys at the starter shack said the smell was from fertilizer. In a way I agree, but in my opinion the product being used was what we called sludge. I recall people in out small Illinois town lining up with their pickup trucks for a load of the dried sludge which they would use as fertilizer.:(

Once again, it is fish kill do to temperature inversion from all of the rain. I read an article in The Daily Sun (I think it was the Sun) several weeks back, that talked about the problem. The warm water on top of the ponds does not hold as much O2 and with all of the rain the warm water if forced to the bottom of the pond and the O2 rich cooler water is forced to the top and some of the fish die causing quite a stink

For a good explanation of Milorganite, go here Milorganite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milorganite) The development of Milorganite was a huge recycling project that has been going on for decades.
They claim it is "baked clean," I guess like those bags of cow manure sold at the nurseries that we all used around our flower and tomato plants.
Whether that's what they're using on the golf course, I can't say. It does say in the article that it is used extensively by golf courses.

Whether that's what they're using on the golf course, I can't say. It does say in the article that it is used extensively by golf courses.
I've used Milorganite on my lawn and it definitely was NOT baked clean and it stunk for quite awhile plus I didn't think it was a very good fertilizer. I went back to Fertilome.

Well, that does it, my dogs are no longer going to be allowed to pee/poop anywhere south of 466.:cus:Unfortunately that won't solve the smell problem. The smell itself comes from a secret install of a dumping station by aliens to use when they're trekking in this area of the galaxy. No one realizes that it's there because they've extensively camouflaged it and they go into invisible mode when stopping by to dump their black & brown holding tanks!
Unfortunately, I cannot tell you it's exact location because I've been held to secrecy as to it's precise location under the penalty of their returning my sanity, but I can tell you that where it is located, you'll find lush lovely plant life abounds in it's immediate location!
Gotta run now! My handlers are taking me in for my next treatment.

Warren = how do you know this????
Did you not read the other posting that explained exactly what was causing the smell. I personally know what it was because as I stated earlier, we were playing golf in the smell and one of the guys picked up a piece about the size of a tennis ball. One whiff was all it took to know exactly what it was.

You couldn't be more wrong. There is quite a difference in human waste and dead fish. I continue to post that I was part of a group playing golf in that horrible smell. The fairways were covered in fine pellet size dark material. That particular day the humidity was 100% when we started the round of golf. The humidity was what caused the smell to be released from the substance being applied as fertilizer. IT WAS NOT FISH KILL !!!! On some of the holes there was no water within a half mile, but the smell was just as strong as every other location. Do you really think the golf division or the Daily Sun would admit that we Villagers were playing golf atop human waste ??? If you do, then I have a snow plow here in Florida I would like to sell you.

DANG. This whole subject stinks and so do attitudes on it.
I think we aren't for sure that it was the fertilizer or the fish kill or what it was and we haven't heard from the smellers south of 466A whether they are still smelling it.
Still?
Do you think it is a STILL? I never thought of that.
Lordy...have you noticed how we like to fuss and have the last word on this forum?? And some people like me don't know when to shut UP!!!!

Still there along Pinellas/BV this morning....gave me an extra incentive to pick up my pace during this section of my run.
I didn't smell it while running BV/Hillsborough Trail, even though that area is fairly close to the wetlands.

What prevents this from getting into our groundwater? How about the sprinkler water at our homes? The water at the outside spigots?
I've always found the water thing here kind of confusing, does the water from the sprinklers come from the golf course runoff, how about the sewer thing in the street, where does this go?
Am I the only one repulsed by this?

Of all people, I like to be first to blurt out an opinion with no clue what I'm talking about. I thought I'd just wait for something substantial and let this settle down and then find out what happened. didn't smell it or walk in it or golf in it.
This is STILL an amazingly helpless thread. apparently there is no official verification what happened or why altho we know where. So is nobody following up with somebody in charge?

Warren has now explained this whole thing three times in gruesome detail. Please don't make him explain it a fourth time, or it may be accompanied with pictures in technicolor. :jester: I'm glad TOTV doesn't offer scratch n sniff!

No - No -No - you should drink one maybe more large glasses of kool-aid before researching the health risks

I've played Bonifay and had the same experience. It smells like a sewage treatment plant to me and I think the wind was blowing from the East. I feel sorry for the people with linais over there. I don't think they would be usable.

Or the houses.
Went to Bonifay CC restaurant a couple years ago soon after it opened and noticed the heavy sewer treatment plant odor in that area. There are fixes to the odor problem but it is expensive. Apparently the money hasn't been spent to make the fix yet.

Well. In the spring when they spread cow manure on Ohio farms it is fragrant. Amazing how that stuff makes the garden grow.
I was over there yesterday morning and it smelled a bit like rubbing alcohol.
No joke.

Ok I don't know anything about this mysterious odor, but I know the Bonifay area cuz I live here, on Destin course. The strongest odor I get here is when my boxer farts.

I made a trip west on 466a yesterday around 10:00am and back east around 3:00pm....at both times numerous sprinklers were running and the smell was awful. The question of the day for me is why do we run sprinklers in the middle of the day? Reclaimed water or not, this is a waste of both water & electricity, AND it was raining on my return trip! I owned a home in Lake County and we were not permitted to operate our sprinklers between 10am and 5pm....reason given was that during the heat of the day, the water evaporates before it has time to absorb into the ground. I guess the water in the Villages is "fast absorbing"...ha!

Sometimes sprinklers are run in the common areas around here...even when it is raining and it is simply a form or flood control and keeping the water levels in the ponds from overflowing.

I am SOOO SORRY I asked the question in the first place!! ☺
The smell was definitely different from the fertilizer smelland it was gone by late morning the next day. I think it was a sewer plant and it was worse than the fertilizer smell, but thankfully short lived. I know the sprinkler smell and the fertilizer smell and this was not either.
