Croaking Frogs in Retention Ponds

My house backs up to a retention pond...house is 2 years old...last summer pond was very quiet...this year not the same. Starting at dusk until almost dawn, the lake is VERY noisy with croaking frogs. To the point, that you can hear them inside the house with windows/doors closed. We have friends on other existing lakes, where there is no noise. Has anyone experienced this and will it subside after a period of time?

A lot of frogs are seasonal and have more active croaking during mating season.

The ones that are currently croaking will probably subside but the "next in line" will start up.

Nature is amazing. Enjoy it!

I'm glad that many of you find my question to be funny, however, if you had a sleeping problem that impacted your health to a very serious degree, you wouldn't think that this noise from the ponds is very funny...but continue to joke....

I live by a pond for two years now and am used to the croaking of frogs at this time of the year as well as the train whistles and golf course maintenance beginning at 6:00 am.
Have you considered a sound machine?
If it is adversely affecting your health you might have to consider moving. Average villager does move three times.

I run a fan in our bedroom all year, hot or cold. I need the air to circulate and I need white noise to drown out any other noises or I cannot. I tried a sound machine and it did not help me. The fan works much better for me.

I feel sorry for you! I know what its like not to get a good night sleep. We didn't want to live on the ponds because of the snakes and we didn't consider the frogs. Hopefully someone can recommend something for you beside selling your home. Good luck!

We had some dogs move in next door to us once when we lived in Conn. and they howled at night. No one could sleep it was not funny at all. Despite the authorities laughing and making baying at the moon jokes the dogs were eventually removed so the neighborhood could sleep. But I remember the month it took to get something done and the migraines from lack of sleep.

Hopefully this is good news for you. When I first moved into my home in Hadley, I'm on a pond too, the din was incredible from all the croaking frogs. However, I didn't hear them inside the house. On my lanai, it was extremely loud.

I come from a very large cities and loud noises at night do not bother me. But I have noticed (and have no idea why), each year the croaking was less and less to the point that now, there isn't any. Actually, I miss it but I can understand how it could bother someone who is not used to noise. So I hope you can bear with it for awhile and I think the noise will disappear.

It's something like the cicadas they've had up north recently. Very loud and it bothers you if you don't know what it is.

What about contacting the local agricultural authorities? They seem to know a lot about how to handle plant and wildlife issues. Pardon my ignorance but I don't know the actual name of the office.

We once had a cricket in our house, and we couldn't find the little bugger as he was in the walls somewhere. It drove us CRAZY! I would imagine your situation is similar in
irritation. I hope you find a solution soon.

I don't live right by a pond but we walk by them at night and their songs are so cute! They sing , "Hey Baby, Hey Baby".

I don't know what good it could do to call anyone about them. It isn't like you want them to spray frog spray! :) They will calm down when mating season is over!

On the bright side, those frogs are keeping the bug population (mosquito nursery) at bay.

I'd suggest beginning adding bedroom accoustal insulation to uncover where the noise intrusion is present.
(starting even with temporary sheets of styrofoam shoved in the windows - on the inside of the window treatment - then during the daytime, store under the bed) Or hire a sound engineer to perform an accoustal survey of the inside of your house (it's got to be cheaper than moving).

No, I don't imagine anyone can do anything about it, but knowledge about whether it is seasonal or expected to continue might help one decide whether they need to move or not. Knowledge is power, sometimes.

Have you tried ear plugs? Not sure I could tolerate anything stuck in my ears, but my wife sleeps with them in every nite. I'm one of the fortunate ones that is asleep about 90 seconds after my head hits the pillow.....noise or no noise.

I am sorry that you are having this problem since for some sleep comes way too dearly. Have you tried ear plugs? Just a thought. I am also sorry that some in this forum use other peoples posts as a springboard to showcase their own " funny quips," and I use that term loosely. I wonder what people who are not here yet think when they experience all this bashing. I hope it does not appear that all people here are insensitive to the feelings of others. That has not been my experience. Maybe it goes along with the feeling some Villagers have of entitlement. I can't figure it out. :shrug: :spoken:

Last night during dinner at a friends house she called us all to the kitchen which is in the front of the house to show us a BUNCH...over twenty of little frogs sitting on the glass. It was raining outside and their home isn't on a water lot.

thanks to those that took my question seriously and tried to help. The sound is extremely loud within the house (not just bedroom). I've put the fans on and the sound machines and still hear them. This is my second move (don't want to move again) so will go with what the lady in Hadley indicated and hope that the sounds will reduce as the pond matures.

I will speak to those that reply with flippant answers...keep them to yourself...they aren't cute and they do nothing but cause irritation to the person asking the question...and will reduce those of us wanting to ask more questions and using this TOTV to 0%.

Ummmm, where else would you find croaking frogs except on ponds, lakes and wetlands? We lived near a pond on a golf course in Georgia and the frogs gave us quite a concert. I loved it, but then that's just me....a nature lover.

I don't think most really intended to be flippant but frogs do live in ponds and if you live near a pond it is likely you will hear frogs. I understand your sleep problem as that has been an issue for me before. I just think you may need to try ear plugs or learn to love the sound of the frogs. I also agree with other posters that say this will likely be a seasonal problem.

Wondering if the sounds could also be alligators. I met someone who lives on a lake here and she said the alligators make sounds that mimic frogs.

Truly, from the title of this thread I shuddered to think it referred to frogs (Villagers) croaking (dying) in the retention ponds. I am glad it is just about amphibian choruses. I currently reside on a slope above a creek full of frogs. They do indeed croak at night. When I first moved in it kept me awake. After a while the sound faded into the background. I actually enjoy it now and the sound lulls me to sleep.

The sound does affect my house guests which means they usually on stay only a few nights. Thank you frogs!

My yard also attracts mockingbirds. The first one, which had a great voice stuck around for years but must have perished. After a while another one with not as good a call took over. Oh well...

BTW, if you think frogs are bad try geese. Years ago I stayed at a friend's Chesapeake Bay waterfront house on the eastern shore of Maryland. Those birds were unbelievably loud. Couldn't sleep a wink!

Could you purchase one of those "white noise" machines? That might drown out the noise from outside. A couple of years ago I had a different problem....I'd hear birds at night making a lot of noise. That was the mockingbirds marking their territories. Haven't heard them since so maybe the good news is we eventually get used to it. I for one am not marginalizing your question...it is NOT fun to have sleepless, frustrating nights!! Hope you find a solution!
