View Full Version : Sprinkler Heads versus Autos

I ride a bike nearly every day and have noticed that a lot of residents have placed very large stones at their street side sprinkler heads. In my opinion the residents that have done this are far more interested in doing a lot of damage to someones automobile that they are in trying to protect their $8.00 sprinkler head. No driver intentionally wants to leave the paved roadway and damage your sprinkler heads. If you are just trying to keep parkers from driving across the sprinkler heads, then I suggest a short length of PVC pipe at the heads will do the trick. At one residence I observed today, the boulders were at least two feet tall with four placed along the street. This is on property that that resident doesn't actually own. Striking one of these boulders, will with a doubt cause thousands of dollars worth of damage to a car.

If I put big rocks to protect my sprinkler heads, so be it.
As far as car damage, if they drive on my lawn, then they deserve whatever they get.:clap2::boom:

As someone who just had to pay to get both the sod and sprinkler heads repaired, I concur with "so be it". No, I do not want to damage someone's vehicle - just wish whomever would afford me the same courtesy. And, alas, whomever, did not leave a check to make the repair. :(

As I said, I don't think anyone intentionally wants to damage any residents sprinkler heads. I have lived in the Villages for 15 years, corner lot and on a curve. I use the donuts and have NEVER had a sprinkler head damaged. As I also said a reflector or pvc pipe will help. For the life of me, I cannot understand another poster who used the words "so be it". Why would a Villager want set up a situation to do thousands of dollars damage to another Villager's car and perhaps cause an accident to protect a $8 sprinkler head. My neighbors are caring and considerate to each other and would never get satisfaction in causing harm to another Villager.

For the record, the individual (s) who drove through my front yard and damaged both sod and sprinkler heads (with donuts), caused me to spend almost $400. No, I do not want to cause any damage to another's property but others should be just as respectful of property which is not theirs.

Surely you know that the sprinkler heads adjacent to the street are not on your lawn nor is it even your property. Every street has a certain set back distance from the street that is deemed to be Right of Way (ROW) and eventually becomes the property of the county. You agreed thru the covenants that you would accept responsibility for maintaining this ROW.

So do you call the county to replace the sod and sprinklers?

OK one more time, I hope you get it this time. It is not your property BUT YOU SIGNED AN AGREEMENT TO ABIDE BY CERTAIN COVENANTS AMONG WHICH ARE THE MATAINENCE OF THE RIGHT OF WAY portion adjacent to your lawn. Also people who have homes with a lake in the rear of their property have similiar responsibilities to the normal water elevation.

The "logic" of the OP escapes me. As long as drivers stay on the road and respect the property of others, it doesn't matter WHAT you put there.

Are you telling me you have NEVER ran off the road at least a foot or so ??? If you haven't, I can tell you that you are one in a million. I personally can say I have become distracted and left momentarily left the roadway. Or finally, how about the situation where a oncoming vehicle is on your side of the road, what do you do ??? Certainly, you steer off the road to the right.

No, I never have. I don't think it's that common.

Do you really drive on the highways ??? Probably everytime I drive I see drivers (especially cell phone users) drive off onto the shoulder. You are a miracle, But I still cannot believe there is any driver who has never let their drift onto the shoulder. Never to do that is really something.

I don't think it is really much of an issue for drivers and it is not meant for drivers. It is meant for parkers. Too often, people visiting their neighbors park on the street. The problem is, especially in the villas, they also park on the edge of neighbors' yards and the landscaping. The large rocks are a definite deterrent and keep cars and carts on the street.

I'm just wondering if you are serious or a rabble rouser? If you can't keep your car on the roadway then maybe rocks on somebody's lawn isn't your biggest problem.

Don't you think the same deterrent could be achieved with those short flexible markers rether than boulders two feet in height. It would bother be greatly if I had a friend come to my home and somehow run over one of the boulders and do 4 or 5 thousands of dollars damage. Anyway, this is why we have "pop up" sprinkler heads so they won't be hit by mowers or whatever. Mine are below the lawn level and it is impossible for them to be struck.

Not long ago I parked my car knowing there was a low obstruction just to the right of my front right wheel. When I prepared to leave by backing up( forgetting the obstruction was there) , I turned the front of my car to the right and struck the obstruction. It only cost $2700 to have my car repaired and you know what?? I later viewed the obstruction and saw no reason what-so-ever for it being there. It just makes more sense to me to highlight sprinkler heads with PVC pipe or something that will make a driver aware yet not cause thousands in damages.

So, if I understand you correctly, you parked on the grass (or rock landscaping) at a friend's or friend's neighbor's house. You parked too close to a large, decorative rock and damaged your car when leaving. Yes, it's a shame your car was damaged to "protect a sprinkler head" (which is not quite accurate -- people are trying to protect their yard from tire damage), but why were you parking on the grass? Had you made sure your car was on the street, it would have been a none issue.

Where in my post does it say I parked on the grass, or that I was at a friend or neighbors house or that I struck a boulder, or that a sprinkler head was being protected ???????? I was actually attending an event where we all were parking on the grass and the obstruction was a sign post base... I merely used my experience to show that a person could park on the street edge, have cars in front and back and as one leaves could swing the front of their auto into a boulder and cause a lot of damage.

Warren Kiefer, you are a confused individual. First you talk about sprinkler heads and then low obstructions. Just to be clear for YOU, when YOU drive a vehicle at anytime YOU are responsible for what happens. Just because other people put something in a particular location and YOU feel it impedes YOU, that is your problem to deal with and accept responsibility if YOU hit it or damage it. It's called accepting responsibility for your own actions or lack there of.
Enough of trying to past the blame to others. YOU won't let it end here but you have over stayed youR welcome on this site.
Good night sir!

Does anyone know where I can buy some of those big rocks. You wouldn't believe what my corner looks like with the ruts and destroyed sod. A few large bolders would do the trick I think.

Thanks, I am going to buy the biggest bolder I can find for my corner. I would have never thought about putting a large bolder on my corner if it wasn't brought up.
