Dog Swimming Hole

Hi Everyone~
I just moved here to help my parents out for a bit. And brought my lab/boxer mix. We moved away from a river which she swam in every day. I am looking for something here in the Villages or close where she can swim. I realize I need to be careful since waters in this state can have alligators. So, I was hoping someone here would know of a place she can go swimming safely. Thanks for your help.

Please don't let your dog swim in any body of water in Florida, except the ocean or gulf. My son was visiting with his Golden, took him to a park near by to let him swim, a ranger stopped and advised him not to let him swim in any lake or pond in the state due to the gators.

It is sad, but there is no where in TV for our friends to swim. I do believe the closest option is the gulf or the ocean. Wish things would change, but don't hold your breath.

use of the Mallory Club swimming pool requires a paid membership--but for people, dogs are not permitted in public swimming pools. I don't know why someone would tell you otherwise.

IMHO, there are NO safe places for dog to swim unless it is the ocean. There is a tiny pond in back of our house in TV ... no gators for six years ... and then one day there appears a gator. Please don't take any chances with your pet.

Doggie Doo Run Run has two very small pools for large and small dogs to romp around in. One is just a kiddie plastic pool that has gone to the dogs. For the small pooches, they built a sheltered area with concrete encased above ground pool. This is very small also.

DDRR is a private dog park at the intersection of CR101 and 104. It is about one mile north of Southern Trace Shopping Center up the street that has CVS and the New Covenant United Methodist Church (CR101). http://www.newcovenantumc-fl.org/

It costs $3 a day to visit for first dog; $5 for two dogs. They also have monthly memberships at $25.00 for one dog. It seems to be $30.00 for two dogs.

Limit three dogs per visit.

No unneutered or spayed dogs and up-to-date on shots.

Aggressive dogs are removed even though you do have to keep your eyes on the dogs. Once in a while there is a spark-up over a ball or something.

I have seen a turtle trying to squeeze itself through the fence to get into DDRR. Probably to get away from gators in a nearby golf course pond. Never seen any gators at the dog park unless you mean U of Florida sports fans.

Here's an interesting link for places to take your dog (some have dog swimming areas) I'm not familiar with all the cities but they seem to be all on the coast. PEAR Park in Leesburg supposedly has a swimming area for dogs.

Based on what I have personally experienced, I would never let a critter into the Gulf either. Between gators, crocodiles, parasites, sharks, and stingrays, dangers abound.

They just splash around in the surf, chase birds and play around, it's not like they're doing any long distance swimming. We walked the beach almost every day-never had a problem.

thanks everyone for the great suggestions. My dog has swam in oceans all over both coasts, like Patty55 says, mine just play in the surf, not too worried about sharks. I love the idea of a dog park with a pool. But, unfortunately my dog and I got attacked by two dogs a few years ago, and since then my dog has a really hard time letting other dogs come towards me. So, as you can figure the dog parks are not a fun time for us these days:-) Again thanks for all the help. I guess I will just have to take regular trips to the shore:-)
