View Full Version : Can't turn HVAC fan off

My house, like most in the Villages, comes with the Ecobee thermostat. I turned off my system, and it's confirmed with the message "no equipment running'. But the fan is still running. When i went to the fan setting, it only has an 'on' and 'auto' setting, no 'off'. In the 'auto' setting, you can set minimum run time. I set mine to '0 minutes/hour' which is the lowest setting possible. But my fan keeps running. What do i need to do to turn the fan off?
I followed the instructions here but it did not help:

I suggest that you verify that the smart recovery setting is disabled for both heating and cooling. Also, turn off the circuit breaker and then turn it back on.
On the thermostat:
Select Main Menu > Settings > Preferences
Select Heating Smart Recovery or Cooling Smart Recovery.
Touch Enable or Disable.

Yes, Turn the Circuit Breaker off ! If the fan is still running after the breaker is on , it may be your Thermostat…

Has happen to us plus 3 others we know. In one case the fan wouldn’t come on, rest of us fan would run constant. We all have Carrier units.
The components that control the fan are located in the fan motor end cap. The individual parts cannot be replaced. The entire fan end cap must be replaced. Probably still under mfg warranty? Labor is your cost unless you have a service contract. Your cost about $150 range for labor. We used Munns.

How often does the fan come on and for how long? I had the same issue with my new carrier equipment and ecobee thermostat. I also set the fan's minimum run time to zero and it STILL came on. However, it's only for about 5 minutes twice an hour, so I am just living with it, as it's only the fan, not the condensor that's running and the fan is at least ciruculating the air inside the house.

Just had my fan controller replaced by Munns. It was also running continuously. It was under warranty.

I found the Ecobee much better than those Carrier thermostats that they put in North of 44.

Nope. Four years is a good run for not one single issue. But like anything else, something can always go wrong.

I then turned off the circuit breakers. There are 2: one is labeled A/C, the other A/H. When I turned off the A/C breaker, fan kept running. When I turned off the A/H breaker, the fan went off. Fan came back on when I turned on the A/H breaker again.

The only other thing I can suggest is to do a factoy reset on your thermostat. If that doesn't work, then I don't think the problem is with the thermostat. Here are the instructions. Good luck.

There is probably a relay that controls the fan, it is possible (not probable) that the relay contact(s) have welded closed and are keeping the fan on. You will probably not be able to diagnose this yourself, and I would not suggest it. If none of the above suggestions work, then I would go with a reputable AC repair service and see what they find.

The likely answer was in this post and a few that followed for the newer systems.

More reasons for the KISS(keep it simple stupid) mentality. Fan either runs all the time or when compressor on. Should not be so complicated.

The thermostat is just plugged into the sub base that is attached to the wall . The removal process is to pull the thermostat straight out of the sub base it will unplug from the base. This will stop the fan if the problem is in the thermostat. If the fan continues to run with the thermostat removed from the wall this proves the problem is not the the thermostat and will require a technician to fix this issue.
The thermostat will plug right back into the sub base if you align it up and press it in. There are connectors that you will need to properly align for it to go back into place.

Yes, Turn the Circuit Breaker off ! If the fan is still running after the breaker is on , it may be your Thermostat…
Could be the fan motor too. I just spent $705 with Sun Kool replacing the air handler fan motor for this exact scenario (on an 11 yr old system with thermostat working just fine). Fan shuts off now.

Ecobee is the best thermostat out there, I’ve owned the others. Our custom built house had 4 of them 7 years ago, not 1 problem with them nor with this 1 in our current house. We had ours replaced by Munns over a year ago because of a recall or some global issue, and the replacement was 1 step up from the original. Thermostats are very easy to setup and operate especially from your phone from anywhere in the world

The so called "smart" thermostats are not user friendly and too complicated IMO. Of course, if your hvac unit is setup for one you are stuck with it.

I had the exact same issue this past summer. Open the Ecobee phone app, select the more button, look at the lower right bottom screen, looks like 2 toggle switches, this will take you into quick changes. You should see fan settings, should be on auto, also for some reason when I select away for now, the fan turns on, Home for now sets the fan in auto mode, and fan goes off. I believe this is a software error. This is my third home with a smart thermostat and I like the look of the unit. but it is has to be the most difficult to use the smart app for programming, comfort settings, Schedules and eco+ settings are not that intuitive. Just my 2 cents worth. Good luck.

Just a caution on fans running continuously. This applies to the hot humid summer air conditioner. Fan needs to stop when AC stops. If not fan air could pickup moisture from condensor and pump it back into house and raise humidity.

If your fan does not stop after popping the thermostat off, then the problem will be the fan in your furnace enclosure ("Air Handler" or "A/H"). There is an electronic control module (ECM) on the end of the fan that manages on/off and speed which has been known to fail. I replaced mine by myself a couple of years ago for about $250. Furnace models are fairly common here, so your tech may have a compatible module. If not, they may recommend replacing the entire motor. With labor, you should expect to pay quite a bit more for this. I hope your problem is simpler than this... good luck.

Thank you. This is what it turned out to be, a bad ECM. I had a service call with SunKool who replaced the part, thankfully still under warranty. He said normally it's an $800 job, and another $800 if the motor is bad. It took him about 15 minutes, so it looks easy enough to do if you know what you're doing.
He also told me this is a very common problem in the Villages due to voltage spikes in the electrical line which reaks havoc on the low voltage motor module, and that my whole house SECO surge Mitigator will not protect it. SunKool does offer an HVAC surge protector (<$200 P&L) which should protect against such voltage spikes. I'm thinking it might be a good investment once my unit goes off warranty.

Thanks for the update.
But, I disagree about an HVAC surge protector being a good investment. I wouldn't invest in an HVAC surge protector without a better explanation than that. It sounds like gobbledygook to me. Why didn't the SECO device prevent the damage? Also, I would cancel any monthly payments you may be making to SECO for the whole house surge protector. In my opinion, these surge protectors are a ripoff.

Apreciate the update, good news it was covered under warranty.
As far as I know, the HVAC surge protector is installed at the disconnect box at the compressor. While a good risk reduction for the outside unit, it would not provide as much protection for the blower motor control as a whole house protector.
Those failures are more likely due to infant mortality or a component of a design flaw.

Isn't the SECO surge protector supposed to protect both the inside and outside components of the HVAC system? A surge protector installed on the outside disconnect box is downstream of the house electrical panel which is located upstream of the disconnect box. So, what can the HVAC surge protector do that the SECO surge protector cannot do before the current reaches the disconnect box? In other words, why do you need two surge protectors? And, if the HVAC surge protector is better than the SECO surge protector, why not just replace the SECO surge protector with the HVAC surge protector at the house meter?

I am GUESSING the proposed HVAC surge protector would be installed at the disconnect for the HVAC unit. Actually, I have the SECO surge protector and with it there were several individual surge protectors. I believe the SECO unit does a reasonable job, as there was a close in lightning strike at the rear of my neighbors house. They had around $7000 in damages, we had none. I believe this was a combination of the main SECO surge protector, and all of the individual units.

I think you are correct that the HVAC surge protector would be installed at the outside unit disconnect. But, the Sunkool guy told the OP that the $200 HVAC surge protector would protect against "low voltage" surges, which the SECO surge protector would not. This sounds like hogwash to me because the outside disconnect is a high voltage switch for safety purposes. The surge protector would do nothing to protect a low voltage motor module, which apparently is located inside the house.
